Opens on Belleville Campus

paintings on display during a recent exhibition entitled “On Higher
Ground.”
The William & Florence Schmidt Art Center, a gallery and conference
center on the Belleville campus of Southwestern Illinois College,
has welcomed its first visitors. Funded by private gifts, the Schmidt
Center includes four galleries and a 650-seat conference facility,
as well as staff offices and a reading lounge. A planned sculpture
garden, which will include some water exhibits next summer, will
be part of the visual art experience.
A lead gift from the William E. Schmidt Charitable Foundation provides
the name for the building. The late William and Florence Schmidt
were associated with Columbia Quarry in Illinois.
College alumnus and architect, Brad Eilering, working under Woolpert
LLC, designed the Schmidt Center. Project manager for the 6,800-square-foot
building was Holland-Hinrichs Construction.
The opening exhibit in February was an international show, “A Breeze
from the Gardens of Persia, New Art from Iran.” This display included
93 paintings and one-third of the artists are women. The current
exhibits, featuring quilts and maquettes, opened May 20 and remains
through the end of July.

A $10,000 Tenet Healthcare Foun-dation grant was given to the St.
Louis district office of the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The ADA plans to step up its efforts to increase awareness of diabetes
among African-Americans and Hispanics, two populations at increased
risk for diabetes. The grant will support staffing, developing educational
materials, and translating services related to the ADA’s outreach
effort.
“With this grant, we will have the revenue to support the program
on an ongoing basis,” says Ed Clay, executive director for the Gateway
Area office of ADA. “With Tenet’s help, we will also be able to
go more places in both the African-American and Hispanic communities.”
AAA Four Diamond Awards Go to 10 St. Louis Area Restaurants and
Hotels
Eight restaurants and two hotels in the St. Louis region have earned
the American Automobile Association’s (AAA) Four Diamond Award for
2002, ranking them among the nation’s finest establishments.
“AAA Four Diamond winners are a cut above the rest as they consistently
deliver a memorable experience, complete with superior personal
service, quality amenities, and an unforgettable ambiance,” says
Mike Right, AAA vice president.
According to Right, only three percent of the more than 28,000 AAA-rated
lodging properties and four percent of the 13,000 restaurants attain
the Four Diamond distinction. AAA’s team of 60 full-time professional
field inspectors conduct unannounced evaluations of restaurants,
hotels and campgrounds. From this evaluation, AAA assigns a rating
of one to five diamonds to qualifying establishments in the U.S.,
Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Webster University Expanding to St. Charles County
In August, Webster
University will open a St. Charles County campus at WingHaven®,
McEagle Development’s planned community in O’Fallon, Mo. Currently,
more than 400 students from St. Charles County attend Webster University
at other metro locations.

Webster University will open an extended campus this August on
the third floor of the MidWest BankCentre Building at the McEagle
Development in WingHaven®.
“WingHaven® affords Webster University the opportunity to offer
graduate and undergraduate level classes to a burgeoning professional
community,” says Richard Meyers, Webster University president. He
projects the WingHaven® campus will enroll up to 150 students in
its first year.
The 10,000-square-foot Webster exten-ded campus will be located
on the third floor of the Midwest BankCentre Building, which is
expected to be completed this month. There will be 10 classrooms
electronically linked to the university’s main campus in Webster
Groves.
Washington University Launches Executive MBA Program in Shanghai
As part of a
strategy to develop strong partnerships in Asia, the John M. Olin
School of Business at Washington University began offering an Executive
Master’s of Business Administration (EMBA) degree in Shanghai, China.
“We look forward to working with leaders in the Shanghai business
community and with academic colleagues at Fudan University, a top
university in China,” says Washington University Chancellor Mark
S. Wrighton.
The new EMBA program will be a partnership between the Olin School
and Fudan University. “We will be the only U.S. business school
using our core faculty to team-teach an MBA program in China,” says
Stuart I. Greenbaum, dean of the Olin School of Business. “We are
honored to work with Fudan—one of the most prestigious universities
in China.
“I’d like to express our gratitude to the Anheuser-Busch Foundation
and Emerson, our two founding sponsors, for underwriting the startup
of this program,” Greenbaum continues. “Both of these companies
have extensive and successful operations in China that proved invaluable
in launching the program. This is another example of how these two
organizations continue their longstanding support for the Olin School.”
The 19-month Olin-Fudan EMBA course of study kicked off in April
and includes 20 graduate business courses each co-taught by an Olin
business school faculty member and a Fudan faculty member in Shanghai
in four-day modules. In addition, students will be required to complete
a two-week residency at the Olin School on the University’s St.
Louis campus.
Chinese nationals employed by multinational companies comprise the
majority of candidates for the program. Students in the inaugural
class represent companies including Accenture, Alcoa Aluminum Products
Co., BP Southeast Asia, Dupont, Ericsson, General Mills, Honeywell,
Johnson & Johnson Medical, Kodak Electronic Products, Monsanto,
Motorola, Shanghai General Motors Corporation, and Textron.
State-owned enterprises in China also have enrolled students in
the first Olin-Fudan EMBA class, including the Shanghai Stock Exchange,
Shanghai Golden Continental Petrochemical Co., and Beijing Fayhoo
Information Technology Co. Seventy-four students—the program’s current
capacity—have been admitted to the first Olin-Fudan EMBA class.
