SLU Researcher Exploring Whether Laser Therapy May Help Stroke Victims

A neurologist at Saint Louis University is researching whether laser therapy, when given within 24 hours of a moderate to severe stroke, may limit damage. Salvador Cruz-Flores, M.D., associate professor of neurology at SLU, is leading a clinical trial of the NeuroThera Laser System to treat ischemic strokes. The study will enroll 660 patients at 50 centers worldwide.

The team will investigate whether near-infrared laser light stabilizes certain cells, which may lessen cell death and improve patient recovery.

Stereotaxis Raises Additional Private Capital

Stereotaxis, producer of a advanced cardiology instrument control system, recently raised approximately $20 million in new private capital through commitments from investors to purchase 1.9 million newly issued shares of its common stock.

Since its founding in 1998, Stereotaxis has developed its technology, raised $125 million in private equity, conducted public stock offerings in 2004 and 2005 that raised more than $100 million in private capital, and grown to more than 125 employees.

Startup Dedicated to Ending Hunger Receives World Bank Award

Meds and Food for Kids (MFK) recently received a World Bank award to continue fighting early childhood starvation in Haiti. MFK manufactures and distributes a high-protein, high-fat peanut butter paste to combat malnourishment.

In 2006, MFK received a grant as a winner of the second annual Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition (SEIC) produced by the Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University.
