INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

Hal Hanstein
president and CEO,
Cardinal Realty Group

“Unseen is untold is unsold.” That’s Hal Hanstein’s personal motto.

As president and CEO of Cardinal Realty Group, Hanstein’s goal is to create widespread visibility for his clients’ properties.

When Hanstein first established his business, he had little more than a laptop and a wireless printer. Now, four years later, he has an aggressive marketing campaign, nine agents and plans for a second office, this one in Springfield, Mo. Through his commercial real estate business, Hanstein has established what he calls his “dream come true.”

“I love making deals happen and bringing business to St. Louis,” says Hanstein, who started in real estate at age 15. “This is the most exciting time since the World’s Fair to be living in St. Louis. Momentum is growing in the City.

“Everywhere you look, development is happening.”

Meanwhile, Hanstein’s business, which handles properties worldwide, has incurred a steady growth pattern, doubling each year. He specializes in the sale and leasing of commercial investment properties, including industrial, office space, retail, and multi-family apartments.

“My niche is the out-of-towner who does not have a brokerage relationship,” says Hanstein, a former Business Person of the Year in Webster Groves.

Previous Cardinal Realty projects include the buying and selling of the Beaux Arts Building across from Powell Symphony Hall and the sale of land for St. Louis’ only Bentley and Maserati dealership. Cardinal Realty is currently representing Becker Acroma, a Swedish paint manufacturing company, on opening their first facility in the United States.

Hanstein attributes his firm’s success to strong client relationships and to the fact that he has wholeheartedly embraced technology. He provides customers, most of whom “discover” Cardinal Realty on the Internet, with state-of-the-art demographics and satellite imagery and creates customized marketing plans to aid in the sale or purchase of properties.

More than anything, Hanstein loves to make deals happen and describes himself as a climber, rather than a follower. He’s also a self-proclaimed workaholic.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHT

In what ways do you maintain a balance between work and relaxation/exercise?

"Traveling with family or friends helps me maintain a good balance in life. I also exercise three to four times per week which helps manage stress. So far this simple plan seems to work."

Michael Zychinski
Office Managing Partner,
Deloitte

“My inconsistent golf game reminds me to keep my ‘day job’! I love to play, but realize there is a limit to the number of bad swings you can take in any one week.”

Bill McNamara
Chairman & CEO,
Macy’s Midwest

"To perform at a higher level individuals must have the support from their spouse or significant other. My wife and I schedule 'date nights' each week. This is relaxation to me. You must schedule time for yourself. Put it in your Outlook/ Blackberry. You must let yourself take a strategic disconnect from your work."

Dennis W. Lamme
President & Market Manager,
Clear Channel Radio-St. Louis
