WIRED MAGAZINE RECOGNIZES WASH U
COLLOQUIUM FOR MIXING SCIENCE WITH BEER
Washington University’s monthly informal science colloquium,
Science on Tap, has been featured in the April issue of Wired
magazine for its rather unique format. The program is one of
seven similar forums across the country that promote science
conversation in a pub-like setting. Established in the fall
of 2005, Science on Tap highlights topics developed by Danforth
Campus scientists through public discussions at Schlafly Bottleworks,
a brewery and restaurant located at 7260 Southwest Ave. in Maplewood.
“I am thrilled to have Washington University’s Science on Tap
be recognized by Wired magazine,” states Dr. Cynthia
A. Wichelman, assistant professor of emergency medicine and
course director of Washington University’s Mini-Medical School.
“The program is a great way to feature the wonderful faculty
and research going on at the Danforth Campus in a relaxed setting.”
The gatherings are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the last Wednesday
of each month. The format consists of a 20-minute presentation
followed by a seven-minute break for attendees to introduce
themselves and then an hour of discussion (and drinking).
LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE CAMPUS FEATURED
IN NATIONAL PUBLICATION FOR EDUCATIONAL DESIGN
St. Louis Community College’s new Wildwood campus is showcased
in the 2007 edition of Learning by Design, an annual
reference guide that spotlights outstanding school and university
facility design and construction projects. The campus is featured
in the category of “green” postsecondary school buildings that
have been newly constructed.
Designed by William B. Ittner Inc., the Wildwood campus incorporates
design concepts that are environmentally friendly and qualify
the facility for LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) certification. LEED® is the voluntary national rating
system standard for the design, construction and maintenance
of sustainable buildings that create a healthier work, learning
and living environment.
The guide is published by the National School Boards Association
in partnership with Stratton Publishing & Marketing Inc. and
American School Board Journal. Projects are judged by a distinguished
panel of experts in educational facility construction and design.
ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY SENIOR WINS $25,000
AXA ACHIEVEMENT COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
Elizabeth Grondalski, a high school senior at St. Joseph’s Academy
in St. Louis, has been named a national winner of the 2007 AXA
Achievement Scholarship, sponsored by AXA Advisors LLC in association
with U.S. News & World Report.
Ten national winners were profiled in the magazine’s college
financing issue in April.
The scholarship program annually awards $10,000 each to 52 students—one
from each state, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Out
of those students, Grondalski is one of 10 who were selected
as national winners and will receive an additional $15,000 scholarship
award, a new computer and an opportunity for an internship with
AXA.
Grondalski, whose father is an eye doctor, learned about new
technology called the JORDY System that allows people with low
vision to read, write and see. The JORDY is a portable electronic
magnification device that magnifies objects up to 30 times and
can be worn like a pair of glasses. Grondalski coordinated an
event in which a group of sight-impaired veterans was able to
watch a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game using the JORDY equipment.
She also ensured that there would be media covering the event
so that other people suffering from sight diseases could learn
about the technology.
