AMONG 100 BEST
CORPORATE CITIZENS
Investment firm Northern Trust has been named one of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” in the Spring 2005 issue of Business Ethics magazine. The sixth annual survey of Russell 1000 firms aims to identify companies that excel at serving a variety of stakeholders with excellence and integrity. The survey is based on a database maintained by Boston-based KLD Research & Analytics. Companies are noted for “strengths” and “concerns” in eight categories: total return to shareholders, community, minorities
and women, employees, environment, human rights,

CEJKA SEARCH’S DISTER FEATURED
IN HEALTHLEADERS MAGAZINE
The cover story of the March 2005 issue of HealthLeaders magazine—“Do MDs or MBAs Make Better Leaders?”—features comments by Lois Dister, a vice president at executive search firm Cejka Search. Writer Bonar Menninger interviewed Dister for her expertise regarding the pros and cons of having medical doctors, with and without MBAs, in executive leadership roles at hospitals and other health
care organizations.
According to the article, Dister says that there is one school of thought that says that organizations are better off hiring a physician who also has an MBA if everything else is equal. She also points out that a physician leading an organization will have a better chance of success if he “surrounds himself with the right people who have the right mix of experience—clinical, administrative, finance.”
Earning an MBA can have several advantages for a physician who wants to take on an executive role.
“What clients have said is that they’re interested in someone with an extra degree, because it shows that the individual is really committed to the executive path and not just sick of clinical work and looking around for something new,” Dister says.
She also notes that physicians often face a stereotype of being arrogant and difficult to work with, which is an unfair presumption. Most
physicians aren’t arrogant at all, says Dister, but are simply “focused,
intelligent and confident.” |
