Recruitment of top talent to St. Louis is on a roll. Reaching for the pinnacle of their particular professions, six people have relocated here in recent years to share their talent and expertise with the St. Louis community.

We welcome David Robertson from France, the new music director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, who declares St. Louis “the most romantic place on the planet.” Dr. Creg Williams comes to us from Philadelphia with a mandate to reform our city schools in his new post as superintendent. And Kevin Dolliole brings to town the success of his past leadership of San Antonio’s airport as he steps up to his new appointment as Director of Airports for St. Louis.

Additionally, taking the presidential reigns of Barnes-Jewish Hospital is Andrew Ziskind, M.D., from Seattle. W. Roy Dunbar left Indianapolis behind for MasterCard International as its new President of Global Technology and Operations. And finally, number 27 for the St. Louis Cardinals, Scott Rolen–compliments of Philadelphia–is making more fans in St. Louis than Rolen first conceived. The rumors about St. Louis being The Best Sports City in America are true.

Go Cards.

Steve Maritz captures our cover this month. Steve’s great-grandfather started the Maritz family business in 1894 originally as a jewelry company. But much has changed over the years, including the product Maritz Inc. sells. With its world headquarters in St. Louis, Maritz is now the world’s largest source of integrated performance improvement, incentive travel, and consumer market research services. Maritz’s clients include 28 of the 50 largest companies in the world.

Its motto: Work hard, Have fun, Get the job done seems to be paying off. Maritz ranked 227 last year on Forbes’ 500 Best Private Companies List and shows $1.2 billion in revenues for this fiscal year. The private company also has 4,090 employees worldwide–2,130 of those in the St. Louis area.

Looking beyond our borders, we also report about the complexities and potential our region has regarding globalization. The Brookings Institution ranks St. Louis the 15th most internationally connected city in the U.S. For St. Louis businesses, this comes as no
surprise, reveals Commerce writer Asa Pittman.

And meet the man in the spotlight this month, Vaughn Vandegrift, the new chancellor at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Vandegrift, a true inspiration, is the first in his family to graduate from college. He is preparing for the future of his institution, as are other colleges in the region, as they address the nursing shortage and security issues facing the nation. Expansion is in the air.

Speaking of expanding, that’s exactly what Geotechnology Inc., helps builders to accomplish. They are involved with three extensive projects–the new Busch Stadium, the Lambert Airport expansion and the MetroLink Light Rail expansion.

We hope you enjoy this issue of St. Louis Commerce. As always, we welcome your feedback and invite your suggestions for future story ideas to dfleming@stlrcga.org
