WASH U TIES HOPKINS FOR 2ND BEST MEDICAL SCHOOL

Washington University School of Medicine has been ranked the second “Best Medical School in the Nation” and first in “Student Selectivity” by the 2003 U.S. News & World Report rankings of graduate and professional programs. In a tie with Johns Hopkins for the second place ranking, the medical school follows only Harvard, which once again listed as number one.

This is the highest ranking yet for Washington University School of Medicine, which has remained in the top 10 medical schools since the magazine began the annual listings in 1987. Last year, Wash U was rated third “Best in the Nation for Research-Oriented Medical Schools.”

Published annually, the U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on evaluations of national reputation, research activity, faculty resources and student selectivity. Most students use the magazine’s listings in selecting graduate schools.

ST. LOUIS MAKES BIOTECH NEWS IN REAL ESTATE PUBLICATION

The St. Louis area’s advantages for future growth in the biotechnology industry gained the attention of Midwest Real Estate News. In the April 2003 issue, “The Sequence for Success” story details the region’s focus on biotechnology for economic development, largely because the area known as the BioBelt already has unique plant and life sciences institutions.

Midwest Real Estate News notes St. Louis’ “research engines help develop biotech businesses, by providing scientists with new ideas and technology.” The area’s life sciences research engines include Monsanto Co., Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis University, Missouri Botanical Garden and the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center. Plus, the biotech boom is being energized with support from the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Center for Emerging Technologies and the Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprises.

Burt Follman, chairman and CEO of Follman Properties ONCOR International of St. Louis says “the fact that there are three or four institutions that are unique to America—makes us different.” Others interviewed for the story were Joe Bannister, director of new technology development with Clayco Real Estate Services; Timothy Sansone, principal with Sansone Group; and Mark Schnuck, president and CEO of DESCO Group.

The area’s established companies and universities as well as local support from science incubator facilities are noted as indications of St. Louis’ strengths for growing its biotech industry. And new facilities add to the growth possibilities. Under development near the Missouri Botanical Garden is the Commerce Bank Education Center. This $8 million adaptive renovation of a former warehouse will provide 58,000 square feet of biotech wet lab space after its completion later this year.
