Applying the law to multi-cultural, multi-jurisdictional and multi-national transactions is the major challenge facing law firms today. Bryan Cave excels at it. With its headquarters in St. Louis, the firm employs more than 800 lawyers (250 in St. Louis) and 1,000 staff in 16 offices: nine throughout the United States and seven spread from London to the Middle East to China.

One of the 35 largest law firms in the world, Bryan Cave posted $350 million in revenues in 2002. Leading this successful law firm since 1994 is chairman, Walter Metcalfe, who joined Bryan Cave in 1982. Despite its reach, Walter Metcalfe and his partners regard Bryan Cave as one firm, not a collection of profit centers and practice groups. The cover story by Pam Droog, details Metcalfe’s outlook and direction for the firm.

Dr. James Dennis, president of McKendree College, is a college professor’s son. Like Walter Metcalfe, an attorney’s son, he intended to follow in his father’s footsteps. But his career in higher education shifted from teaching to administration when he accepted an offer to be vice president of student affairs at USC in 1982. In 1994, he moved to Illinois to become McKendree’s 32nd president.

Though Dennis misses teaching, McKendree College has taken enormous strides under Dennis’ leadership. The campus, 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, has expanded dramatically as has its curriculum and other programs. In the last nine years, McKendree’s enrollment has more than tripled and the average GPA of incoming freshmen has essentially doubled. U.S. News & World Report has ranked McKendree in the top tier of Midwest regional colleges for three consecutive years.

This issue of St. Louis Commerce also features our popular Commercial Construction Roundup. This section reviews significant projects undertaken in metropolitan St. Louis by the region’s general contractors, developers, architects and engineers. As a sidebar to the Roundup, three local construction industry leaders—Joe McKee, president of Paric Corp., Gary Frossard, president of Kadean Construction Co., and Pam Duffy, president of Rhodey & Son Construction—offer their opinions on the state of the regional construction industry and what to expect over the coming year.

Additionally we have a story for you about HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, and its impact on local businesses; an interesting insight into the challenges facing CIOs; and a perspective on company fitness programs. There is more. Enjoy, and as always, I look forward to hearing from you.
