RCGA Selected
for Ford Foundation Multi-Year Civic Venture
In conjunction with the RCGA’s Community Capitalism initiative to
stimulate private investment in distressed areas of the St. Louis
region, the RCGA has been selected by the Ford Foundation as one
of five regional business organizations for funding and participation
in a three-year national venture. This national venture will design
and demonstrate strategies to galvanize sustained corporate involvement
in building wealth and economic opportunity in distressed parts
of these participating regions.
In addition to the RCGA, the four other selected business leadership
groups are: the Greater Washington Board of Trade; the San Francisco
Bay Area Council; the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of
Chicago; and the Austin Area Research Organization.
The five regions met for two days recently in Washington, D.C. for
a session facilitated by Brian Bosworth, President of Belmont, Mass.-based
FutureWorks, Inc. The St. Louis team included former Deputy Mayor
of Development Mike Jones of the Empowerment Zone; former RCGA Senior
Vice President of Economic Development Ronnie Bryant; Inner City
Competitive Alliance (ICCA) Chief Operating Officer Kevin Cahill;
RCGA Director of Strategic Business Initiatives Gene Gorden; and
Dick Fleming, president & CEO of the RCGA.
The Ford Foundation project will focus in particular on “win-win”
approaches that advance the business strategies of established corporations
as they build new wealth and expanded opportunity in struggling
areas by helping to establish and grow new and small enterprises.
