Above: (Left to right): David Darnell, president
Central Banking Group for Bank of America and RCGA board vice chair
for economic development; Jay Fitzsimmons, president and CEO of
GKN Aerospace Services–St. Louis; Hazelwood Mayor T.R. Carr; Evans
Richardson, staff director, state and local Government Affairs The
Boeing Company; and Dick Fleming, president and CEO of the RCGA,
were all involved in bringing GKN Aerospace Services–St. Louis to
the region. Jay Fitzsimmons addressed the initial 2001 Campaign
for a Greater St. Louis Investor Council Meeting in early May.
GKN Aerospace Services–St. Louis President and CEO Jay Fitzsimmons
touted the St. Louis region’s skilled workforce, excellent air service,
central location and high quality of life during his insightful
presentation in May in the initial 2001 Campaign for a Greater St.
Louis Investor Council Meeting hosted by Campaign Chairman and RCGA
Vice Chair for Economic Development David Darnell.
GKN is the $7.5 billion London-based manufacturer of automotive,
aerospace and industrial services that recently acquired the Boeing
Military Aircraft and Missile Systems fabrication center in Hazelwood,
following a year-long collaborative effort involving the RCGA, Boeing,
the Missouri Department of Economic Development, St. Louis County,
and the City of Hazelwood. As a result of the acquisition, some
1,200 Boeing employees transferred to GKN, and the company has made
Clayton the corporate headquarters of GKN Aerospace Services North
America.
GKN is planning to add St. Louis assembly operations of metal structures,
high-tech manufacturing of resin transfer molding (RTM), and engineering
services in metal, composites and RTM, along with supply chain management.
Hazelwood Mayor T. R. Carr introduced Fitzsimmons to the campaign
investor gathering, noting that the St. Louis region’s skilled and
available workforce uniquely positions it to support this advanced
manufacturing employer.
GKN represents the traits we are seeking as St. Louis works to grow
distinctive industry clusters to create regional wealth in the New
Economy. GKN combines advanced manufacturing techniques with information
technologies in a global network. |
