The RCGA is
once again pleased to be a sponsor of The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur
Of The Year Awards, which recognizes entrepreneurs who are innovative,
financially successful and show personal commitment to their businesses
and communities. This year’s winners are again a diverse group,
ranging from a mortgage company, advertising agency, construction
company and toy manufacturer to a real estate developer, homebuilder,
dental products manufacturer, temporary medical staff provider and
a business software company.
These entrepreneurs and others are responsible for helping St. Louis
earn the reputation of being a great place for entrepreneurs.
Also in this issue, this month’s profile features Davina Lane, an
entrepreneur in her own right, who established a health management-consulting
firm in 1990. The firm eventually merged with a larger corporation.
Today she heads up Group Health Plan, Inc., the area’s second-largest
HMO, serving more than 260,000 members in Missouri and Illinois.
Some of her responsibilities include administering GHP’s recent
acquisition of 60,000 Health Partners of the Midwest. More recently,
GHP has become the replacement carrier for Aetna’s St. Louis HMO
members. She is also devoting her time to several e-business initiatives,
such as Benefit Express, an on-line information and quote service
for insurance brokers, and Web M.D., an electronic claims service
for providers.
In other St. Louis Commerce news, Kevin Kipp reports on the
Missouri Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation
System (ITS), examples of applying technology to improve traffic
flow and road safety. ITS provides real-time traffic information
to motorists and emergency services, thereby informing motorists
about the best route to travel and allowing emergency services to
remove roadway incidents quickly.
And lastly this month’s Trends column focuses on the increasing
number of individuals who have found ways to take their careers
part time. While part-time positions have been available for years,
now professionals are working reduced hours while still maintaining
high levels of responsibility. The writer, Laurie Burstein, interviewed
a doctor, a judge, and business executives who manage to maintain
responsibility while working part time. By showing greater flexibility,
employers are better able to accommodate the needs of the workforce.
