JA National Business Hall of Fame Recognizes

For more than 25 years, the Junior Achievement
(JA) National Business Hall of Fame has honored the nation’s
most distinguished businesspeople for their outstanding contributions
to free enterprise and the promise of a better, stronger society.
Executives at Fortune 1000 companies nominated this year’s eight
laureates, including Charles Knight, CEO of Emerson Electric.
Knight became one of the youngest chief
executive officers of a billion-dollar corporation at age 37
when he joined Emerson Electric in 1973. Knight led the company’s
transformation from a narrowly focused manufacturer to a global
market and technology leader in five business segments: industrial
automation; process control; heating ventilating and air conditioning;
electronics and telecommunications; and appliance and tools.
During his tenure, sales have risen more than tenfold to $14.3
billion in 1999.
Also welcomed into the JA Hall of Fame are
John H. Bryan, chairman and CEO, Sara Lee Corporation; Lodwrick
M. Cook, former chairman/CEO, Global Crossing Ltd.; John H.
McConnell’ founder, Worthington Industries, Inc.; Roger Miliken,
chairman and CEO, Miliken & Company; Harland “Colonel” Sanders,
founder, Kentucky Fried Chicken (1890-1980); Edgar S. Wooolard
Jr., retired chairman and CEO, DuPont; William Wrigley Jr.,
founder Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, (1861-1932). These eight laureates
join a distinguished group of 187 men and women who have been
inducted into the JA Hall of Fame since its founding in 1975.
JA is the world’s largest and fastest growing organization dedicated
to educating young people about business, economics and free
enterprise. Through age-appropriate curricula, JA Programs begin
at the elementary school level, teaching children how they can
impact the world around them as individuals, workers and consumers.
JA programs continue through the middle and high school grades,
preparing students for additional key economic and workforce
issues they will face in the future. Today, JA reaches more
than 3.5 million students through 160 offices nationwide and
one million more students in nearly 100 countries.
New SCI Unit Names VP of Sales
Systems Consultants, Inc.
(SCI), has appointed Tim Irvine vice president of sales
for the new SCI/e-ASG Business Unit.
In his new position, Irvine works closely with SCI’s sales force
to strengthen the company’s position as a public sector leader
and manages all sales of the Custom Envision Series software
suite. Most recently, Irvine was vice president of sales for
RD Raab Associates, a software consulting and recruiting firm.
He has a bachelor’s degree in commerce and engineering from
Drexel University in Philadelphia, Penn.
SCI offers state, county, local governments, public utilities
and school districts an integrated system including a complete
range of financial, human resources, property and utility management
applications.
DESCO Group Names Ide VP of Business Development

In her new position as vice president of business development
for The DESCO Group, Gina Ide leads a company-wide effort
to identify, procure and serve business clients for St. Louis’
largest retail property management firm.
Ide joined DESCO in 1995 as asset manager, directing operations
for the company’s retail portfolio, including leasing, facility
maintenance and enhancements, and operation of the centers.
She is a member of the company’s strategic management team.
With a bachelor’s degree in public policy sciences and religion
from Duke University, Ide is a member of the Institute of Real
Estate Management and International Council of Shopping Centers.
HOK Names VPs to Executive Committee and National
Marketing Board
Clark S. Davis, FAIA, senior vice president and chief administrative
officer of the St. Louis office of HOK (Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum)
Inc,. has been elected to HOK’s corporate executive committee.
The executive committee oversees HOK’s 24 offices worldwide
and staff of 1,800. Members of HOK’s leadership team include
Jerome Sincoff, chairman; Gyo Obata, one of the firm’s founders
and co-chairman; William Valentine, president; Patrick MacLeamy,
vice chairman, chief operating officer; Larry Self, vice chairman,
chief business development officer; and Ron Labinski, vice chairman.
Davis was named to the St. Louis office management committee
in 1993 and became chief administrative officer in 1998. He
joined HOK’s board of directors in 1999.
In other news, Kyle St. Peter, group vice president and marketing
director in the St. Louis office of HOK, has been named to the
company’s national marketing board. As one of HOK’s four core
boards, including design, management and service delivery—the
national marketing board recommends strategic planning operation
policies and procedures to HOK’s executive committee.
St. Peter, who joined HOK in 1988, directs all marketing activities
within the public sector for HOK’s north central region, including
offices in St. Louis and Chicago. He is a member of the North
Central Region’s Office Leadership Group, which manages all
aspects of the office’s architectural and interiors design practice.
As part of that team, St. Peter is involved in special projects
related to service delivery and contracts and oversees public
relations. He also has served as an account manager for key
clients during the pre-design process.
Stumpf Promoted to VP of Taylor-Morley Carpentry

George Stumpf has been promoted to the newly created position
of vice president for the carpentry division of Taylor-Morley,
Inc., which ranks among the nation’s largest builder/developers.
Stumpf, a former general manager of the division, has spent
his entire career in the local residential/commercial construction
industry. He has been a member of Carpenters’ Union Local 47
since 1975.
In his new role, Stumpf will be responsible for supervision
of all Taylor-Morley building sites; the firm’s personnel, including
150 carpenters and 18 general foremen; and the division’s administrative
staff.
“To balance the inevitable cycles in residential and commercial
construction, our immediate plans call for increased emphasis
on tenant finishes, renovations and other small commercial projects,”
says Stumpf, a Ballwin resident. “Continued expansion is expected
to entail a greater focus on custom and off-site homebuilding
as well.”
Civic Progress has new chairman, president-elect
and adds member
Thomas H. Jacobsen, chairman of the board of Firstar Corporation,
will become president of Civic Progress, an alliance of chief
executives from leading private sector organizations in the
St. Louis region. He succeeds Andrew C. Taylor, president of
Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Charles W. Mueller, chairman, president
and CEO of Ameren Corporation, will become president-elect.
Jacobsen has been a member of Civic Progress since 1989 and
assumed his current post at Firstar upon its merger with Mercantile
Bancorporation in 1999. He served as CEO of Mercantile for
10 years.
Mueller has been a Civic Progress member since 1994. He joined
Union Electric Company, now known as Ameren UE, in 1961. Mueller
has served as CEO of the utility company since 1994.
W. Patrick McGinnis, president and CEO of Ralston Purina Company,
was elected to Civic Progress McGinnis was elected to Civic
Progress following Ralston Purina’s recent spin-off of Energizer
Holdings, Inc. J. Patrick Mulcahy, former co-CEO of Ralston
Purina with McGinnis, retains his seat on Civic Progress as
CEO of Energizer Holdings, Inc.
McGinnis began his career with the company in 1972 and served
in various marketing capacities in St. Louis and Canada, becoming
executive vice president in 1984. He was appointed president,
chief operating officer for the Grocery Products Group in 1989.
In 1997, McGinnis was named co-CEO and co-president of Ralston
Purina Company, and he assumed his current position in June
1999.
He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver and
a master’s degree in business administration from Washington
University Graduate School of Business.
“Civic Progress believes St. Louis must be one of the nation’s
leading regions, and we will continue to work very hard with
others to help St. Louis achieve its promise,” says Taylor,
who is now chairman. “The three of us will work as a leadership
team, actively collaborating with many other organizations and
leaders to advance our region.”
P.R.A.M.E. Names St. Louis Native Distinguished
Marketing Person of the Year

The Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing Excellence
Awards Committee (P.R.A.M.E) has named St. Louis native Ty Christian
as the 2000 Distinguished Marketing Person of the Year.
As president of the Orlando-based Yesawich, Pepperdine & Brown/Christian
(YP&B/Christian), which develops and implements diversity marketing
programs for clients across the United States, Christian was
cited for his marketing accomplishments in the tourism, hospitality
and lodging industries.
Among its clients, YP&B/Christian serves the Missouri Division
of Tourism, Best Western International and the city of Jacksonville,
Fla. A graduate of St. Louis’ CBC High School, Christian has
a bachelor’s degree in radio/television/film from the University
of Missouri at Columbia and is associate publisher and co-founder
of Black Family Today Magazine and African American Parent.
P.R.A.M.E., the marketing component for a coalition of four
leading United States minority and communications professional
organizations, presents the award annually. The organizations
of the National Alliance of Market Developers, the National
Black Public Relations Society, Black Creative Professionals
Association and the Organization of Black Designers have a combined
national membership of more than 1,000 minority communications
and marketing professionals and have been recognizing outstanding
talent since 1992.
Bradford & Galt Promotes Manager to VP of
Permanent Placement
Bradford & Galt Inc., a Creve Coeur-based information technology
staffing firm with offices in Kansas City, Peoria, Dallas and
Chicago, has promoted David Hume to vice president of permanent
placement.
Hume, of Chesterfield, oversees the permanent placement division
of Bradford & Galt’s St. Louis office. The division recruits
computer professionals to fill permanent positions with high-tech
firms and larger-to-medium-sized corporations in the St. Louis
area.
Hume has worked for the national information technology-staffing
firm for nearly 12 years, the last six as manager of permanent
placement. With annual revenues exceeding $27 million, Bradford
& Galt provides professional, information technology staffing
solutions, including consulting, supplemental staffing, temp-to-perm
and permanent placement.
Charter Communications Appoints Senior VP
As the newly appointed senior vice president of Communications
for Charter Communications, Inc., David Andersen serves as chief
spokesperson for the broadband telecommunications company. He
oversees all communications activities including media relations,
public relations, investor relations, industry and community
affairs, and other areas.
Andersen was previously vice president of communications for
CNBC, a unit of NBC and the recognized leader in providing real-time
business information to more than 150 million homes worldwide.
Prior to CNBC, Andersen was vice president of public affairs
for Atlanta-based Cox Communications, Inc., where he established
the public relations department in 1982. Earlier in his career,
he held various public relations positions with the General
Motors Corporation, including Southeast Regional Public Relations
Representative in Atlanta.
Andersen holds numerous honors and distinctions in the cable
television industry and the public relations field. He received
a Vanguard Award, the cable industry’s highest honor, for his
achievements in public relations, including the co-founding
of the Cable Television Public Affairs Association and Cable
in the Classroom. He was also instrumental in creating the widely
acclaimed On Time Guarantee and The Future Is On Cable public
relations initiatives in conjunction with the National Cable
Television Association (NCTA).
Washington University Awards Honorary Degrees
To Medical and Business Leaders
A medical leader and corporate executive were among six outstanding
individuals elected to receive honorary degrees during Washington
University’s 139th Commencement.
They include Michael M. Karl, MD, who has practiced medicine
in St. Louis for more than 50 years. He joined the faculty
of Washington University School of medicine in 1940 and was
named a professor in 1972.
In the midst of his internship and residency training at St.
Louis City Hospital, he also did a fellowship in cardiology
at the School of Medicine. He has been there in one capacity
or another ever since.
A professor of clinical medicine, Karl went into private practice
and started the West End’s Maryland Medical Group in 1946, and
he continued that practice until 1987. Throughout those years,
he maintained close ties to the School of Medicine, Barnes Hospital
and the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis.
Karl and his wife, Irene E. Karl, Ph.D., a research professor
of medicine, were the first husband-and-wife team to have an
endowed professorship established in their honor at the School
of Medicine.
Lee M. Liberman, chairman emeritus of Laclede Gas Co., is revered
in St. Louis as a civic leader and a champion of community causes.
He is a former chairman and vice chairman of the Board of Trustees
and, currently, is a student. He is a Ph.D. candidate in American
literature and history in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
and he received a master of liberal arts degree from the University
College in Arts & Science in 1994.
Liberman started his career at Laclede Gas as an engineer in
1945, after graduating from Yale University with a degree in
chemical engineering and serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch described him as a “corporate executive
with a Boy Scout heart,” serving as vice chairman of the capital
resources division of the current $1 billion Campaign for Washington
University.
Alvin J. Siteman is chairman and president of both Site Oil
Company of Missouri and Flash Oil Corp and president and CEO
of the Siteman Organization—a major real estate developer, property
manager and leasing agent. He received a bachelor of science
degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in 1948.
Throughout the St. Louis area, Siteman is known and respected
for his expertise in many arenas, including his keen interest
and support of the arts. He is a current trustee and immediate
past president of the Saint Louis Art Museum’s Board of Commissioners,
and he is an advisory board member of Laumeier Sculpture Park,
which he helped found.
Siteman and his wife, Ruth Levinson Siteman, who received a
bachelor’s degree from University College in Arts & Sciences
in 1975, recently committed $35 million to further the development
of a major cancer center under the direction of the University’s
School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Fontbonne College Board of Trustees Appoints
Three New Members
Audrey Olson, CSJ, coordinator of CSJ community life, Nazareth
Living Center;
Thomas M. Gunn, president of The Gunn Group, Inc., a global
marketing consulting firm, formerly senior vice president of
business development for Boeing;
Helen Ryan, CSJ, chair of religious studies, Chaminade College
Preparatory School. Olson and Ryan are Sisters of St. Joseph
of Cardondelet, the order that founded Fontbonne in 1923 and
a continued sponsor of the college.
Former BJC Director Boosts Firm’s Health Law
Practice
Donn H. Herring, who has served as director of
legal services for BJC Health Systems since 1994, has joined
Rosenblum, Goldenhersh, Silverstein & Zafft, P.C., as a principal.
Herring was a senior member of the legal services department
at BJC Health System. As director of legal services, he planned
and negotiated physician practice purchases and several exclusive
agreements between hospitals and hospital-based physician groups.
He also assisted in the development of a number of strategic
initiatives, including a physician integration strategy for
Missouri and Illinois and a physician compensation plan for
employed physicians. During his time at BJC, Herring also served
as chief legal counsel for Missouri Baptist Medical Center in
west St. Louis County and Boone Hospital Center in Columbia,
Mo.
Herring is an adjunct assistant professor of law at Saint Louis
University School of Law, where he teaches a seminar entitled
“The Regulation of Health Care as a Business.” He graduated
from the Ohio State University College of Law in Columbus, Ohio,
summa cum laude. He ranked third in his class, was named to
the Order of the Coif honor society and received the Hornbook
Award. He earned a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in business
administration and economics from Westminster College in Fulton,
Mo.
Newton Named St. Louis Variety Club Board
President
Jan L. Newton, president of Southwestern Bell–Missouri will
serve a two-year term as the board president of the St. Louis
Variety Club, a nonprofit organization that has raised more
than $53.8 million through its annual telethon.
Newton is responsible for Southwestern Bell’s regulatory, legislative,
governmental and external affairs, as well as community and
industry relations throughout Missouri. Since she joined the
company in 1976, Newton has held numerous management positions
including finance, sales, marketing and regulatory affairs.
Prior to her new position, she served as executive director
in the office of Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., communications chairman
and CEO.
Newton has a bachelor’s in business administration from Texas
Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and completed post-graduate
management programs at Duke University and the University of
Southern California.
Follman Properties ONCOR International Promotes
Sammons to Vice President
Kathie M. Sammons, director of information services
at Follman Properties ONCOR International has been promoted
to vice president. Sammons has been with Follman for almost
six years and has more than 15 years experience in demographic
analysis and the various aspects of market research in St. Louis
and other metropolitan areas.
In her new position, Sammons is responsible for
real estate market surveys and analysis. She also evaluates
the impact of economic changes on real estate sectors, serves
as a resource of real estate related information and provides
information technology support to the company.
In addition to a real estate broker’s license, Sammons has a
master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Virginia
and bachelor’s degree in history from Winthrop College in Rock
Hill, S.C.

Promotes VPs
George F. Koob and Lynn Richter have been promoted to vice presidents
at Coldwell Banker Commercial American Spectrum.
Koob has more than 25 years experience in the real estate and
construction industries. He is a licensed civil engineer with
a bachelor’s degree in finance from Saint Louis University.
Koob is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors
and the St. Louis Association of Realtors.
Richter began her real estate career in 1973 and specializes
in tenant/buyer representation for commercial, office, retail,
industrial and investment real estate clients. An active member
of the West County Chamber of Commerce, Richter also is affiliated
with the National Association of Realtors, Missouri Association
of Realtors and the St. Louis Association of Realtors.
