MacArthur Project Integrates Law and Neuroscience

Researchers say that neuroscience could have as dramatic an impact on the legal system as DNA testing.

To that end, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is bringing together scientists, legal scholars, jurists and philosophers from across the country to address addiction, brain abnormalities and decision-making as they relate to complex issues, such as criminal responsibility.

Washington University professor Marcus Raichle, M.D., will co-direct one of three working groups of scholars and legal experts from more than two dozen universities.

Based at the University of California, Santa Barbara, The Law and Neuroscience Project is the first systematic effort to bridge law and science in considering how courts should deal with new brain-scanning techniques. The project is supported by an initial three-year, $10 million MacArthur grant.

Wash U.’s Molecular Imaging Center Gets 5-Year, $10-Million Renewal Grant

A grant from the National Cancer Institute will fund a second cycle of research at the Washington University Molecular Imaging Center. Initiatives at the center include an effort to help monitor the contributions of key genes to the start of tumors.

A project led by John F. DiPersio, M.D., targets cases of leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers with bone-marrow transplants, which sometimes lead to a potentially fatal complication because the transplanted cells attack the patient. Using radio-labeled tracers developed at the center, scientists can now track where transplanted cells travel.

In addition to research activities, the grant includes support for postdoctoral and graduate students.
