It is time once again to salute civic leadership in the form of the Right Arm of St. Louis Award—the highest award that the RCGA bestows each year to recognize outstanding leadership. A sampling of previous Right Arm award winners includes such distinguished St. Louis leaders as Jack and Andy Taylor, Sen. John Danforth and Dr. William Danforth, and the late Jack Buck. This year the award goes to a group of siblings, the third generation of Schnucks. Each of the six has advanced not only the success of the $2.4 billion Schnuck's supermarket chain, but have made a mark through civic leadership.

This month’s cover story by Laurie Burstein highlights the contributions made by each of this year’s Right Arm of St. Louis Award winners. The award, first established in 1975, was given to the leadership of the St. Louis Cardinal's last year for the club's investment in downtown St. Louis with the new Busch Stadium and Ballpark Village.

The focus of this month’s St. Louis Commerce is on health and wellness. We examine the distinctive healthcare assets that contribute to our region's quality of life.

Bill Beggs Jr. takes the pulse of St. Louis’ healthcare by interviewing key leaders; Denny DeNarvaez, president and CEO of St. John's Mercy Health Care; Jim Kimmey, president and CEO of Missouri Foundation for Health; Steve Lipstein, president and CEO of BJC HealthCare; Tom Rockers, president and CEO of St. Anthony’s Medical Center and Jim Sanger, president and CEO of SSM Health Care St. Louis. In this wide-ranging conversation, the leaders discuss everything from trends to obstacles facing healthcare.

Extending the healthcare theme, Jim Baer takes a look at wellness at work. Perspectives are provided by Dennis Matheis, president of Anthem/Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Missouri; Roman Kulich, the new president and CEO of GHP; Bob Henkel, COO of Ascension Health and Emile Des Roches, managing partner of Mercer.

Shera Dalin pens a piece on how St. Louis-headquartered Express Scripts, which recently announced a $30 million expansion, is focusing on customized pharmacy care. Dalin also visits with Daniel Getman, St. Louis site director and vice president of global research for Pfizer, which is investing $250 million at its St. Louis region campus.

Other stories on healthcare this month include a look at the $235 million BJC Institute of Health at Washington University and the just completed $82 million Doisy Research Center at Saint Louis University. This month's From the Ground Up provides a roundup of other healthcare-related construction underway across the St. Louis region.

In a new feature, “A Day in the Work Life,” Susan Caba spends a day with Peter Raven, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden, a plant and life sciences leader. Concluding the theme, this month's Spotlight focuses on Jai Nagarkatti, president and CEO of St. Louis-based Sigma-Alrdrich, a $2.0 billion life science company.
