St. Louis is one of the nation’s leading cities for healthcare.
St. Louis is home to two renowned medical schools at Saint Louis
University and Washington University. In the class of 2005 these
schools of medicine graduated 262 MDs and 81 PhDs in Biological
and Biomedical Sciences.1 These universities along with a diverse
range of local healthcare companies have also made St. Louis nationally
known as a center for medical research, especially in the areas
of medical devices and pharmaceuticals.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that in 2004 the healthcare industry
in the St. Louis MSA employed more that 100,000 people. The following
table is a breakdown of the number of employees and establishments
in various healthcare industry sub-sectors.
In 2005, the St. Louis MSA had 57 hospitals of which 42 were general
acute-care hospitals. These area hospitals had over 12,500 beds
authorized including approximately 7,600 medical-surgical beds.3
Greater St. Louis’ medical schools and hospitals are consistently
among the top recognized in the U.S.

2005, St. Luke’s Hospital was again named a Top 100 hospital
by Solucient, an information provider to the health- care
industry. St. Luke’s Hospital has been listed as a Top 100
hospital six out of the last ten years and its consistent
