HIGHER RANKINGS IN HIGHER EDUCATION                                 

Washington University in St. Louis is the fourth-best medical research school according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools” 2007. The medical school ranked among the top ten in the specialty fields of pediatrics (6), internal medicine (7), women’s health (10), and drug/alcohol abuse (10). The biological sciences graduate program ranked ninth overall with top ten rankings in immunology/infectious disease (5), genetics/ genomics/bioinformatics (6), molecular biology (8), and cell biology (9), according to the same report.1

Washington University ranks 12th in the “Best National Universities” category, and the Olin School of Business ranks 13th in the “Best Business Programs” category in U.S. News & World Report “America’s Best Colleges” 2007.2 The Olin School of Business ranks 15th according to the “Best Undergrad-uate B-Schools” released by BusinessWeek, May 2006.3

Saint Louis University (SLU) was named No. 77 in the “Best National Universities” category by U.S. News & World Report for 2007 and ranked among the top five U.S. Catholic universities by the same publication in 2006. The magazine also ranked SLU law school’s health law program No. 1 in the nation in “America’s Best Graduate Schools” in 2007.4

U.S. News & World Report in 2007 named the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ international business program the 8th-best international business program in the country. The Princeton Review ranked University of Missouri–St. Louis’ college of business administration among the nation’s best business schools.5

Webster University was named the 23rd-best university in the Midwest division of the 2007 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Universities-Master’s” category. Maryville University ranked 29th on the same list, along with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Fontbonne University among the top 70.6

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was named as one of the best MBA programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in the world by the Princeton Review for 2006.7

Additionaly the City of St. Louis ranks #1 in the country for library services, according to a study that ranks America's Most Literate Cities. The St. Louis Public Library was best among libraries in 69 cities, according to a 2005 study by Central Connecticut State University. The study also ranks St. Louis the 15th most literate city based on cities with populations over 250,000.8

The percent of adults over 25 in the St. Louis MSA who are high school graduates was 86.6 percent in 2005, exceeding the U.S. average. The percent of adults over 25 with a bachelor’s degree or higher at 28.0 percent was also above the national average.9

ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION                              

Public School Districts

There are 161 different school districts in the St. Louis, MO-IL MSA and approximately 1,000 public schools. All districts are funded by local tax levies with varying assessment rates. Municipalities play a central role, with the local tax base of each school district funding new and existing educational programs and services, as well as providing maintenance and upkeep to the facilities.

Many St. Louis MSA schools provide additional programs for gifted students, special programs for challenged students, and magnet or charter schools for children seeking a non-traditional learning environment.

Private School Districts


There are 434 private schools in the St. Louis MSA. Many long-established and strong independent schools exist, as well as an active parochial school network. The St. Louis region ranks among the highest in the nation for having one of the largest percentages of enrollment in Catholic parochial schools, as measured by the number of registered Catholics in the St. Louis area.

Metro Academic and Classical High School in St. Louis ranked 40th according to “The Complete List: 1,200 Top U.S. Schools” by Newsweek, which ranked the nation’s best public high schools for 2005. Seven other St. Louis area high schools were listed in the top 1,000 secondary schools, as of May 2006. The St. Louis area schools included:
