The Region at a Glance

The St. Louis MO-IL MSA was recently expanded by the Census Bureau to include four additional metro area counties. The bi-state metropolitan area includes eight counties in both Missouri and Illinois, for a total of 16 counties. The current 2004 population estimate is 2,735,927. This ranks St. Louis as the 18th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Signs of Growth

According to revised estimates by the Census Bureau, the City of St. Louis’ population rose slightly in 2003, reversing decades of decline. At the same time, a separate analysis of Census data by the Brookings Institution showed that on a regional basis, the St. Louis metropolitan area is now experiencing net positive in-migration of college educated 25-34 year olds.
