HIGHER RANKINGS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

The St. Louis area has 28 four-year universities and colleges enrolling over 110,000 students and producing over 25,000 graduates with bachelor’s, post-bachelor’s or professional degrees each year. Higher education options range from community and technical colleges to the esteemed Saint Louis University and the nationally recognized and prestigious Washington University. The following are selected educational rankings achieved by St. Louis area institutions of higher education.

Maryville University ranked 29th of the universities in the Midwest division of the 2007 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Universities-Master’s” category.1

McKendree University was ranked 18th best of Baccalaureate Colleges: Midwest by U.S. News & World Report, earning a “Great Schools, Great Prices” ranking.2

Saint Louis University has the #1 ranked Healthcare Law Program in the country according to the U.S. News & World Report for 2007, as well as among the Best National Universities (82nd) and Top Law Schools (85th).3

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville ranked 46th of the universities in the Midwest division of the 2007 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Universities-Master’s” category.4

University of Missouri-St. Louis was named by the U.S. News & World Report in 2007 as the 8th-best international business program in the country. The Princeton Review ranked the UMSL college of business administration among the nation’s best business schools.5

Washington University in St. Louis—Ranked the 4th best medical research school in the nation. It was also ranked in the Best National Universities category (12th).6 Washington University also received several other rankings within specialty fields including: Primary Medical Care (38th), Health Specialties: Physical Therapy (2nd), Occupational Therapy (3rd), Social Work (2nd), Law Specialties: Trial Advocacy (3rd) Fine Arts Specialties: Sculpting (13th) Top Business Schools: (29th), Top Engineering Schools: (42nd), Top Law Schools: (19th)7 The Olin School of Business ranks 16th according to the “Best Undergraduate B-Schools” released by BusinessWeek, March 2007.8

Webster University was named the 26th-best university in the Midwest division of the 2007 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Universities-Master’s” category.9

The City of St. Louis ranked as the 6th most literate city in the U.S. with populations over 250,000, up from 12th place in 2006.10 Additionally, the City of St. Louis ranks 2nd in the country for Library Support, Holdings, and Utilization according to a study that ranks America’s Most Literate Cities. The St. Louis Public Library was best among libraries in 70 cities, according to this 2007 study by Central Connecticut State University.

The percent of adults over 25 in the St. Louis MSA who are high school graduates was 86.7% in 2006, exceeding the U.S. average. The percent of adults over 25 with a bachelor’s degree or higher was 28.6%, also above the national average.11

ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS

There are 151 different school districts in the St. Louis, MO-IL MSA and approximately 900 public schools. All districts are funded by local tax levies with varying assessment rates. Municipalities play a central role, with the local tax base of each school district funding new and existing educational programs and services, as well as providing maintenance and upkeep to the facilities.

Many St. Louis area schools provide additional programs for gifted students and special programs for challenged students. There are also many magnet or charter schools for children seeking a non-traditional learning environment.

PRIVATE SCHOOL DISTRICTS

There are 376 private schools in the St. Louis, MO-IL MSA. Many long-established and strong independent schools exist, as well as an active parochial school network. The St. Louis region ranks nationally for having one of the largest percentages of enrollment in Catholic parochial schools, as measured by the number of registered Catholics in the St. Louis area.

Metro Academic and Classical High School in St. Louis ranked 147th best in the nation according to “The Complete List: 1,351 Top U.S. Schools” by Newsweek, which ranked public high schools for 2006. Six other St. Louis area high schools were listed in the top 1,000 secondary schools. The St. Louis area schools included:
