INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

DARYL TEGTMEIER
managing principal,
Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.

Like so many young children, Daryl Tegtmeier dreamed of becoming a firefighter. He also was once just a few steps away from joining the Peace Corps.

Though neither of these plans came to fruition, Tegtmeier has, since then, discovered his true passion—consulting.

“I love helping others get what they want,” says Tegtmeier, Managing Principal of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. “I view myself more as a partner than a boss. I am one who can help remove obstacles when they arise, but I can also help guide people.”

A Certified Financial Planner, Tegtmeier joined the firm in July. He is responsible for operations and management of the Missouri and Southern Illinois region, and, through this role, is interested in improving the visibility of the firm.

Planners at Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. specialize in providing integrated, personalized solutions to help affluent business owners, professionals, executives, and retirees develop and implement complex estate, business succession, retirement, and investment plans.

“People pay us a fee for our intellectual capital,” Tegtmeier says. “Other firms hope to link their clients with a product, but we give unbiased advice.

“We serve the client first, last, and always. This is truly a philosophy that we talk about, exhibit, and exude.”

In addition to placing a premium on relationship building, rather than on product selling, Lincoln also is unique in that the local planners can seek expertise from more than 4,000 others nationwide.

With headquarters in Philadelphia, Lincoln Financial Group, for which Lincoln Financial Advisors is an affiliate, had consolidated assets of $128 billion as of March 2006. The company’s offerings include annuities, life, group life and disability insurance, 401(k) and 403(b) plans, and savings plans.

We realize that we don’t necessarily have all of the answers here,” Tegtmeier says. “If something cannot be answered right here, then there are others within our firm that have likely dealt with that particular issue thousands of times.”

In addition to improving visibility for the firm, Tegtmeier seeks to attract at least seven experienced financial planners in 2007 and to continue that growth in subsequent years.

Tegtmeier, himself, was hired on after serving as a Partner for the local Thrivent Financial firm. Prior to that, he was employed as a District Manager by Aid Association for Lutherans. A graduate of Concordia University, Tegtmeier, the father of four children, currently serves on the Board of the Lutheran Association for Special Education.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

What book would you recommend reading to help improve one’s business?

“I like to use good books as prisms, letting them focus my attention and generate an array of ideas that may be outside my normal way of looking at opportunities. I enjoyed Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century” so much that I asked all my senior managers to read it in advance of a Peabody leadership conference. Peabody is the world’s largest coal company and we are rapidly expanding in the fastest growing energy markets in the world. The book is a wakeup call to see how the speed of information and globalization continues to accelerate.”

Books:
1. Jack Welch “WINNING”
2. John G. Miller “QBQ—The Question Behind The Question”
3. Chris Anderson “The Long Tail”

“The book I would recommend for increasing one’s business success is “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. The value to be gained from the text is Mr. Collins’ focus on the key drivers of a successful business. An organization that can identify what it is good at, identify its most powerful economic driver or measurement, and finally, agree on what it is passionate about, has what it takes to go from being good to being great. I appreciate the discipline that it takes for a large, very good company to become one that is truly great.”
