As the only locally-owned and managed private psychiatric hospital
in the St. Louis metropolitan area, CenterPointe Hospital in St.
Charles has created a new model for treating psychiatric and chemical
dependency illnesses. CenterPointe provides inpatient psychiatric
treatment for children, adolescents and adults, as well as
outpatient services for adults.
Dr. Azfar Malik is the founder and chairman of the hospital and
explained that he and a group of 30 investors, mostly made up of
doctors, bought the hospital from an out-of-town company in 2003,
because there was a real void in inpatient psychiatric care in St.
Louis.

Just ten years ago, there were 800 beds in the St. Louis area
for the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse, Malik says. But
in the last several years, due to insurance cuts and the difficulty
in creating revenue for larger hospitals, the St. Louis region was
down to 20 beds. By specializing in just one area, we provide much
needed treatment and are able to streamline our overhead to be profitable. Malik adds that CenterPointe was profitable after the first year.
Malik has been a psychiatrist since 1986 and did his residency at
Saint Louis University. He is the former director of psychiatric
services at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center and is head of
Psych Care Consultants, the largest psychiatrists group in
the St. Louis area.
He also holds an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
Located on a 28-acre campus at 5931 Highway 94 South in St. Charles,
CenterPointe has 72 acute care beds and 14 residential beds. Between
50 and 60 outpatients are also treated through day and evening programs
where transportation is provided when needed. CenterPointe also
has outpatient satellite centers in south St. Louis County and Washington,
Mo.
Malik says CenterPointes care includes individualized care,
a highly-trained staff and family involvement. The hospital is staffed
with about 290 employees including doctors, nurses and support staff.
CenterPointe is also involved in clinical research and future plans
include possible expansion with a group home. |
