DEMOS ARGYROS
executive director—Investments,
Oppenheimer & Co. Inc.

Demos Argyros awakens at four each morning to scrutinize the overseas markets and to position himself for the day’s trading. It is this kind of strong work ethic that Argyros says contributes to the success of Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. (Oppenheimer).

Upon graduating from University of Missouri at St. Louis, Argyros, the 41-year-old son of a Greek immigrant, began his career as a stock broker. He has earned the title of Executive Director-Investments for Oppenheimer, and is one of the lead partners in the group of five at the Clayton office. Along with Argyros, the team includes Edward Daumit, also as executive director–investments, Todd Burnett as senior financial associate, and Deborah Coleman and Megan Plate as registered sales assistants.

Argyros has a long track record of being a team leader, dating back to his days as quarterback for the Lafayette Lancers high school football team here in St. Louis, where he set the team record for most passing yards in a season. This record still stands.

Under his leadership today, the Clayton office of Oppenheimer serves more than 1,000 clients, primarily business owners, corporate executives, and professionals.

In an age where people often turn to the Internet for their investment transactions, Argyros understands the importance of presenting a unique image.

“On our team, we know that the marketplace is very challenging, and that it is, typically, hard to differentiate one firm from another,” Argyros said. “The out-of-the-box thinking within our group helps give our clients an edge.

“There’s no one box that you can put people into and then expect that they will be happy with that box. We listen to their objectives and then strive to meet those objectives.”

The goal at Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. is to have clients understand their financial position, have confidence in their investment decisions, and feel optimistic about their future.

Oppenheimer Financial Advisors serve their clients from nearly one hundred offices located in major cities and local communities throughout the United States and two foreign countries. The Clayton office, one of two in St. Louis, has 47 employees, including 25 brokers.

In January of 2003, Fahnestock & Co. Inc. acquired Oppenheimer, and in September of that same year adopted the name Oppenheimer for the combined company. With over 1,600 financial advisors, it is the seventh largest independent full service securities firm in the United States, in terms of retail registered representatives.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

How did you end up in the field that you are in?

“I ‘ended’ in the field in which I started. My father was a lawyer, I always assumed I would be a lawyer, and there never was doubt in my mind.”

Walter L. Metcalfe Jr.
Chairman
Bryan Cave LLP

“I am the classic example of being in the right place at the right time. I took a part-time teaching position at Patricia Stevens College in the Paralegal Studies program. In 1999, the previous owners of the college approached me because, upon their retirement, they had a strong desire to sell the college to an employee. Everything miraculously fell into place, and at the age of 34, I became the owner and President of Patricia Stevens College.”

Cynthia Musterman
President, Patricia Stevens College

“I started being fascinated with cartoons and drawing when I was about 8-years-old. That evolved into watching way too much TV and getting hooked on commercials. I originally was going to school for animation, but soon realized that making money doing that was slim to none. So I took up Advertising as a degree, and still paint on the side.”

Mark Green
Director of Client Strategy
Brighton Agency

“Few people in the industry know that I am an ordained Baptist Minister. Having served over twenty years in church work, I made the move to the child welfare field because I could see the great need for services for children and families in crisis. This then became another calling for me.”

Wayne G.Crull
President & CEO
Edgewood Children’s Center
