167th ANNUAL MEETING SPOTLIGHTS PUBLIC POLICY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES; SALUTES THE LATE BUZZ WESTFALL WITH RIGHT ARM OF ST. LOUIS AWARD

St. Louis regional business, civic and elected leaders— including Missouri Governor Bob Holden, Missouri House Speaker Catherine Hanaway (R-Warson Woods), U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO), and St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay—and RCGA members were among 1,000 people who gathered for the 167th RCGA Annual Dinner and Meeting on Wednesday, January 14th at the Renaissance Grand Hotel.

U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) provided remarks at the RCGA Annual Dinner and Meeting. Also pictured is KSDK-TV’s Karen Foss, who served as the evening’s emcee.

RCGA Chairman Doug Yaeger, chairman, president and CEO of The Laclede Group, underscored the RCGA’s continuing commitment in 2004 to support revitalization of the region’s center city—citing the historic restoration of the Renaissance Grand itself, hundreds of units of new center city housing, the Old Post Office District and progress on the new Ballpark and Ballpark Village as examples of positive momentum.

In addition, Yaeger recognized Schnuck Markets President and Chief Operating Officer Scott Schnuck as chair-elect of the RCGA.

A performance by members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra concluded the evening.

Yaeger also underscored the RCGA’s resolve to fulfill the region’s potential in the targeted industries of plant and life sciences, information technologies, advanced manufacturing, banking and financial services, and transportation, cargo and distribution. He further noted that both Missouri and Illinois must focus on such critical issues as transportation, higher education, and invest in such industries as life sciences, which will generate a significant return on investment.

The RCGA’s top honor, the Right Arm of St. Louis, was presented to the family of the late St. Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall for his outstanding leadership and commitment to a strong bi-state region during his 13 years as county executive. Westfall served both on the RCGA Board of Directors and as a founding member of the Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council. Former U.S. Senator Tom Eagleton, a partner with Thompson Coburn, shared his perspectives on the St. Louis region’s past and future. KSDK-TV’s Karen Foss was the evening’s emcee.

Several former Right Arm awardees attended the Annual Dinner, including former RCGA Chairman Clarence Barksdale, 1977; Dr. William Danforth, 1994; and Edwin Trusheim, 1992.

Members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra once again provided a wonderful addition to this year’s Annual Meeting. Thanks to Symphony President Randy Adams for arranging the performance. Thanks also to RCGA’s 48 sponsors and media partners who made the dinner and program possible.
