Holland Construction
Services ranks among the top 20 construction companies in the St.
Louis region. You can see this Swansea-based firm’s expertise in
projects ranging from schools to shopping centers, hotels to sports
stadiums, truck terminals to distribution centers and more. At the
helm of this much-admired company is Bruce Holland, whose personal
business philosophy centers on “having satisfied customers.”
Pam Droog’s cover story on Bruce Holland makes it clear his focus
outside himself extends beyond his company. Holland’s civic resume
includes past president of the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois
and Belleville Economic Progress Inc., chairman of the Illinois
auxiliary board of directors of the United Way of Greater St. Louis
and an active member of the executive committee of the RCGA Board.
In many ways, Bruce serves as a bistate bridge builder on a wide
range of issues.
Speaking of bridges, Holland chairs the RCGA New Mississippi River
Bridge Committee, the group that’s leading regional efforts to build
a $1.6 billion bridge north of downtown St. Louis.
As we go to press, Holland says prospects for federal funds for
the bridge are looking good, thanks in no small measure to Senator
Kit Bond’s efforts on behalf of the project in the Senate—coupled
with Speaker Dennis Hastert’s and Jerry Costello’s efforts in the
House! The U.S. House of Representatives has targeted a $376 billion
transportation bill and the Senate’s version is $311 billion, including
$50 million earmarked for the New Mississippi River Bridge. “That’s
the first time the Senate has earmarked funds specifically for the
bridge,” Holland says. “That shows us we’re going in the right direction.”
Besides being home to Holland Construction Services, southwestern
Illinois is gaining a nationwide reputation as a top mid-continental
distribution center. William Poe’s story explains how the 2,300-acre
Gateway Commerce Center in Madison County has the potential to become
one of the top transportation and distribution hubs in North America.
Do you have children heading for college in the next few years?
Peter Downs’ story on saving for college is on point. Thanks to
recent changes in state and federal tax laws, parents now have more
and better tools for managing these financially challenging years.
Programs like 529 plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts
can make a real difference for parents by helping them save on taxes
while saving for their children’s educations.
Also making a real difference is the St. Louis-based Missouri Foundation
for Health. Bob Schaper explains the Foundation serves uninsured
residents of 84 Missouri counties and the City of St. Louis through
grants to a variety of vital healthcare
organizations.
Finally, this month’s profile on Solae Company President and CEO
Tony Arnold spotlights one of St. Louis’ newest corporate headquarters.
