Joining Mercantile
Bancorp in 1995 as president of the St. Louis bank, its lead bank,
and of corporate banking system-wide, Joe Hasten for the past year
has been vice chairman of corporate banking for the overall U.S.
Bancorp.
U.S. Bank is the nation’s eighth largest banking organization with
some $174 billion in assets. In terms of local deposits, U.S. Bank
leads with a market share of 21.5 percent ($8.7 billion) in 2002.
They also have 102 branch locations—the most—in the 13-county market
that Joe oversees.
Joe is also active in the community. Serving locally on Saint Louis
University’s board of trustees, Civic Progress and the Missouri
Historical Society board of trustees.
Since late summer he was elected Chair of the Greater St. Louis
Economic Development Council and vice chair for Economic Development
on the RCGA board of directors. The Council membership includes
the Mayor of St. Louis, and chief elected officials of St. Louis,
St. Charles, St. Clair, and Madison counties along with business
and civic leaders. The Greater St. Louis Economic Development Council
serves as the stewards of the region’s economic development agenda.
In this new role he has led the strategic planning process of the
Council to refresh its mission and assess ways to enhance the St.
Louis region’s economic competitiveness.
Also serving on the RCGA’s board, is a new member and the subject
of this month’s profile, Andrew Puzder, President & CEO CKE Restaurants,
Inc. and Hardee’s Food Systems, Inc.
Puzder, a graduate of Washington University Law School, moved the
Hardee’s headquarters in September 2000, from North Carolina to
downtown St. Louis. St. Louis’ central location was the primary
reason for the move.
Since moving Hardee’s headquarters to St. Louis, Puzder has associated
the brand with several notable St. Louis names and events. Sponsorships
include the St. Louis Rams, St. Louis Cardinals, Saint Louis Zoo,
St. Louis Gateway Classic Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s
St. Louis Race for the Cure and the St. Louis Crisis Nursery.
The former corporate and litigation lawyer today oversees a $1.43
billion company with more than 3,400 locations in 45 states and
15 foreign countries, including 2,255 Hardee’s in 32 states and
11 foreign countries.
And in other St. Louis Commerce news, this issue announces
the magazine’s partnership with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) on
March 13 from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Chase Park Plaza for a symposium,
“Investments in Progress—Make a Deal, Make a Difference in the
Urban Core.” This program, which is an outgrowth of a year-long
research report commissioned by Civic Progress, will focus on market-oriented
investment opportunities and development strategies for the urban
core of the St. Louis metro area.
Case studies of successful development, roundtables at which participants
can learn more about existing opportunities, and exhibit booths
will be featured at the symposium, which is patterned after a highly
successful similar event held by the ULI last year in Los Angeles.
Private developers, investors, lenders, brokers, planners, architects,
attorneys, accountants, community leaders, and local government
officials will be among those attending.
The cover story of the March issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine
will highlight project-specific St. Louis area urban investment
and development opportunities.
