GATEWAY TO AMERICA
AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF ST. LOUIS

By Kirsten N. Hammerstrom

A new history book, Gateway to America: An Illustrated History of St. Louis, tells the story of the growth of St. Louis from its founding as a commercial depot for the French colony based in New Orleans to its present day role as a center for businesses of national and international significance. The book features many of the photographs and illustrations from the extensive collections of the St. Louis Mercantile Library and the St. Louis Public Library as well as the work of contemporary St. Louis photographers.

Gateway to America also features “Partners in St. Louis,” profiles of more than 80 historically significant companies and organizations in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Heritage Media Corp. publishes Gateway to America for the St. Louis RCGA. To obtain copies please contact Sarah Dashner at the St. Louis RCGA Information Store in the lobby of the Metropolitan Square Building, 314/206-3250. RCGA & ST. LOUIS COMMERCE MAGAZINE PARTNER WITH ULI ON MARCH 13 “INVESTMENTS IN PROGRESS” SYMPOSIUM

The RCGA and St. Louis Commerce Magazine are partnering with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) District Council of St. Louis to present a half-day morning program entitled Investments in Progress—Make a Deal, Make a Difference in the Urban Core, on Thursday, March 13, from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Chase Park Plaza’s Khorassan Room. This program, which is an outgrowth of a year-long research report commissioned by Civic Progress, will focus on market-oriented investment opportunities and development strategies for the urban core of the St. Louis metro area.

Case studies of successful development, roundtables at which participants can learn more about existing opportunities, and exhibit booths will be featured at the symposium, which is patterned after a highly successful similar event held by the ULI last year in Los Angeles. Private developers, investors, lenders, brokers, planners, architects, attorneys, accountants, community leaders, and local government officials will be among those attending.

The March issue of St. Louis Commerce will feature a special cover story on project-specific St. Louis area urban investment and development opportunities.

For more information about the Investments in Progress program on Thursday, March 13, contact RCGA Vice President for Economic Development Linda Leonard at (314) 444-1138, or e-mail her at lleonard@stlrcga.org; or Paragon Group Principal and ULI District Council Chair Lewis Levey at (314) 963-0610, or e-mail him at lalevey@evsinc.net.

ULI is a membership organization for those engaged in the entrepreneurial and collaborative process of real estate development and land use policy-making. Founded in 1936, ULI has some 17,000 members working in the public and private sectors, a staff of 100 in Washington, D.C., and a $27 million operating budget. ULI members are the people that plan, develop and redevelop neighborhoods, business districts and communities across the U.S. and around the world-experts from 13 different product sectors and 26 disciplines, working in private enterprise and public service.
