COMMERCE IN BRIEF

ADVANCED IMAGING PROMOTES PATIENT EMPOWERMENT

Advanced Imaging, a high-end provider of radiology services located in Creve Coeur, Mo. is encouraging patients to be more proactive about their health status. Now, with or without a physician referral, St. Louis-area patients can access the diagnostic services such as body scans and imaging to detect the earliest stages of major disease, including heart disease and cancer.

“In the American healthcare system today, we typically treat disease after it is symptomatic,” says Dr. Keith Mullenger, medical director, Advanced Imaging. “At Advanced Imaging, we encourage patients and their primary care physicians to shift their focus to prevention and early detection.”

The statistics can be a factor in the decision to invest in imaging services. According to the American Heart Association, coronary heart disease is America’s No. 1 killer, and the American Cancer Society reports cancer as the second leading cause of death in the United States. Many people may have a higher risk for disease, such as heart disease and cancer, depending on their age, family history, tobacco use and personal health profile.

Regarding prevention and early detection, Dr. Mullenger states, “Coronary heart disease could be slowed, stopped or even reversed before blockage results in heart damage and death.” Though he says that in 70 to 80 percent of all patients scanned, no cancer will be found, early warning signs of cancer at any stage could be found in 20 to 30 percent of Advanced Imaging’s patients. He believes early detection and treatment will give patients longer, healthier lives.

Equipment offered at Advanced Imaging includes: Mx8000 Ultrafast‚ CT (computed tomography); the HeartBeat-CS software program, which uses CT scan data for a “cardiac scoring” test; High Field MRI (magnetic resonance imaging); and Ultrasound.

UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN BREAKS NEW RECORD

JOHN W. BACHMANN
managing partner,
Edward Jones

The 2002 United Way of Greater St. Louis fund raising campaign ended in triumph last fall with the announcement that $67,500,000 in gifts and pledges had been received, the exact amount of the campaign goal. The previous year’s United Way campaign raised a record $66.1 million.

“This number is no accident,” says Campaign Chair John W. Bachmann, managing partner, Edward Jones. “We were counting practically until we walked into the victory celebration tonight. When we got to $67,499,999, of course, we stopped counting. We thought somebody at the celebration could give us another dollar.

“It has been a tough campaign. This year, we were depending on the angels,” Bachmann continues. “What has been truly astounding is the generosity of those who have faced uncertainty and contributed not just at the same level, but have given even more to help others.”

Bachmann made the comments to more than 500 campaign volunteers and contributors gathered at the campaign victory in November. In addition to announcing the campaign attainment, Bachmann thanked the volunteers who made the campaign a success. More than 200 employee groups, labor unions, businesses, corporations and government employees were recognized in the campaign victory book for their work during the campaign.

NEW BUSINESS INCUBATOR TO SERVE WELLSTON AND NORTH COUNTY AREA

Construction is underway for a new business incubator that will be part of a business incubator network, known as the St. Louis Enterprise Centers, which already has locations in the City of St. Louis, West St. Louis County and South St. Louis County. The Enterprise Centers offer start-up businesses low-cost office, manufacturing and warehousing space; shared services; and networking and mentoring opportunities.

When completed in the fall of 2003, the Wellston incubator will be the latest stage in an ongoing, comprehensive redevelopment effort in the City of Wellston. Redevelopment activities include the development of Wellston Industrial Park, Phase I. Demolition has been completed and environmental remediation has begun on this 15-acre portion of the light industrial park. The State of Missouri supported these redevelopment efforts, and that support received another boost when Gov. Holden announced that the state will provide an additional $1.9 million in brownfield tax credits for Wellston Industrial Park, Phase II—a 24-acre extension of Phase I.

Gov. Bob Holden and St. Louis County Executive Buzz Westfall led a groundbreaking ceremony for the new business incubator last fall. Joining the event were Wellston Mayor James Harvey; Mike Jones, Executive Director, Greater St. Louis Regional Empowerment Zone; Jim Gulliford, Regional Environmental Protection Agency Administrator; Kevin Cahill, Associate, Edward Jones; and Denny Coleman, President and Chief Executive Officer, St. Louis County Economic Council.

“Redevelopment of our urban areas is key to the economic health of Missouri,” Gov. Holden said. “The state is proud to support efforts here in Wellston—in rebuilding infrastructure, bringing in industry, and now nurturing start-up businesses. These important investments will encourage a brighter future for citizens and businesses in Wellston and will benefit the St. Louis region and the entire state.”

The new Enterprise Center is the result of a public/private partnership. Sponsors of the incubator include the Office of Housing and Urban Development/Economic Development Initiative ($250,000), Edward Jones ($250,000 for construction, $75,000 for furniture and equipment, $450,000 for administrative support over the next 12 years, and volunteers for mentoring and other activities), the Greater St. Louis Regional Empowerment Zone ($750,000), the St. Louis County Office of Community Development ($45,000 for design), and the State of Missouri ($900,000 in brownfield remediation tax credits and $100,000 in incubator tax credits).

In addition, SBC purchased the state tax credits, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded remediation analysis of the site. The St. Louis County Economic Council is leading development of the site. To further aid the redevelopment of the area, Mike Jones announced a $1.5 million forgivable loan from the Greater St. Louis Regional Empowerment Zone.

“This is a terrific example of what can happen when the public and private sectors work cooperatively,” Westfall said. “By bringing all these resources together, we strengthen the economy, grow business in our county, and nurture the businesses that will be our future economic strength.”
