BEST OF THE BEST

By Laurie Burstein

An outstanding group of companies make up this year’s Greater St. Louis Top 50 Awards. For the 13th consecutive year, the Top 50 awards have been presented by the St. Louis RCGA, in collaboration with the St. Louis office of Deloitte, to those companies who represent the best in their respective fields and have a commitment to making the St. Louis region strong economically and civically.

The RCGA and Deloitte will recognize the winners of the 2008 Greater St. Louis Top 50 on December 11, at an awards presentation dinner at the Hyatt Regency, St. Louis Riverfront. This event continues to be popular with the business community for providing an opportunity for networking and sharing successes.

While the program traditionally focused on technology-related companies, it was expanded in 2004 to recognize companies and organizations in all types of businesses that have made an economic and civic impact on our region. This year’s winners were selected based on their significant contributions to the St. Louis region and how they have positively impacted the future of our business community. Criteria for selecting this year’s winners included: growth in number of employees, enhancement of the community, revenue growth, acquisitions, and expansion/development of facilities.

Two special awards will highlight the awards presentation. For outstanding corporate citizenship, Emerson will receive the Ameren Corporate Citizenship Award. This award is presented to a company demonstrating exceptional commitment to enhancing the quality of life in St. Louis by providing community leadership in the areas of economic development, philanthropic giving, and has dedicated its time and resources to making positive changes that affect residents across the region’s social, cultural and economic spectrum.

Edward Jones will receive the prestigious Spirit of St. Louis Technology Award, which is presented to an organization for its advancements in technology, continued success and commitment to the community.

Top 50 presenting sponsors include St. Louis RCGA and Deloitte LLP. The corporate sponsors are Ameren, Edward Jones and Southwest Bank. And the marketing sponsors are St. Louis Commerce Magazine, KMOX Radio, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, STLtoday.com

2008 Ameren Corporate Citizenship Award

EMERSON

As an international company doing business in 150 countries with 265 manufacturing plants and 140,000 employees around the globe, and a record $24.8 billion in sales during the last fiscal year—Emerson still remains true to its hometown roots. With global headquarters here along with 2,400 area employees, Emerson has a long history in St. Louis, and is strongly committed to the region today.

Emerson was selected as the 2008 Ameren Corporate Citizenship winner, in part for its economic commitment to the region, but also for its civic commitment to enhance the quality of life in St. Louis. The company has provided community leadership in the area of philanthropic giving and dedicated its time and resources to making positive changes throughout
the region.

David Farr, chairman, CEO and president of Emerson, says St. Louis has been Emerson’s home for more than 118 years and is still a great place to run a global business, as well as live and raise a family. He also says being a good corporate citizen has always been a part of Emerson’s history and is woven into the fabric at Emerson today.

“We believe strongly in giving back to the community, as a company and as individuals,” Farr says. “That spirit of giving and helping others is one of the things that makes Emerson such a great place to work and develop a career.”

From a business standpoint, Emerson continues to grow and invest in the St. Louis region. Most of the headquarters corporate operations are based here such as strategic planning, human resources, finance, tax, information technology, legal, and other functions. The company also has some of its important business platforms and divisions located in St. Louis, with 2,400 employees who live and work here and contribute to the local economy.

Emerson is also expanding its facilities here. The company just finished building a new auditorium and conference center on its campus, holding over 400 people and costing more than $15 million, for communication and planning sessions.

In addition, Emerson is currently building a new $45 million data center that will open next year. Farr describes it as a state-of-the-art world-class IT facility. “This new facility will consolidate much of the company’s global IT operations and will be one of the most environmentally responsible, energy efficient data centers in the world, featuring a lot of our own Emerson Network Power technology, and will also include solar power,” he notes.

On the charitable giving front, making St. Louis a stronger community has always been a priority at Emerson. To that end, The Emerson Charitable Trust has invested more than $100 million over the past five years in various charities and organizations.

Since its establishment in the mid-1970s, the Emerson Charitable Trust has distributed approximately $330 million nationwide to nonprofit organizations and educational institutions—with roughly two-thirds targeted to the St. Louis region.

In 2008, Emerson has contributed $27.8 million to more than 2,500 charities in the United States, with more than $15 million of that here in the St. Louis area.

Farr explains, “We organize our giving in five key areas: health and human services, youth, arts and culture, education and civic. We also have a strong matching gift program by which we support our full-time employee giving with matches up to $10,000 annually for higher education, and arts and cultural organizations.”

He adds, “I have always said that this has been a priority for me and for the company, as it has been for my predecessors—making St. Louis a stronger community is a core belief, as this is where we work, play and raise our families.“

Farr has personally been involved with The United Way of Greater St. Louis for many years and was last year’s campaign chair. A record $68.8 million was raised.

Farr describes the campaign, “We set an aggressive goal in an attempt to ‘shock the community’ and raise the United Way contribution bar to a significantly higher level—and it worked. We raised a record $68.8 million to help the people of this community—the biggest dollar and percent increase in 10 years.”

He continues, “United Way is a great organization and we support it in all the communities where we operate. In this region, United Way of Greater St. Louis supports more than 200 local agencies, helps more than a million people, is run largely by some 400 volunteers and has a strong record of fiscal management and planning that assures our donations are effective. As a CEO, I like that. I’m also very grateful they gave me the opportunity to help and to have such a positive impact on this community.”

Helping the youth of St. Louis is another key part of Emerson’s giving, Farr observes.

“We get behind programs and organizations that give young people an opportunity to recognize and achieve their potential. Programs at the school level are very important to us, and places such as YMCA and YWCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, Magic House, Junior Achievement, Ranken Technical College, Variety, are some of the places we help support.”

Emerson has helped many other local non-profits and organizations including Siteman Cancer Center, the Saint Louis Zoo, the Missouri Historical Society, Forest Park, Tower Grove Park, Missouri Botanical Garden, the Urban League, Mathews-Dickey Boys and Girls Club, Our Little Haven, the Magic House, the MUNY, Variety, Washington University, Saint Louis University, Webster University, and many other schools. A complete listing is available on the company website at www.Emerson.com.

Employee volunteerism is another strong component of Emerson’s charitable giving philosophy. Emerson has been one of the leading sponsors of the St. Louis Chapter of Rebuilding Together, and more than 200 employees have rebuilt and repaired 50 homes for low-income homeowners over the past five years.

Farr says his belief in giving back has remained strong throughout his career at Emerson. “Many of us, and I include myself, have been blessed by having received help along the way. I could not have achieved the things I have without the help of others. I feel strongly that it is important we return the favor, give back for the things that we have received. That is the spirit behind our individual giving and is the spirit driving decisions for giving from the charitable trust. We want all St. Louisans to enjoy a stronger and better community.”

2008 Spirit of Technology Award

EDWARD JONES

As this year’s winner of the Spirit of Technology Award, Edward Jones has proven itself not only as a leader in technology, but also as an economic and philanthropic leader in the St. Louis region.

Edward Jones has remained true to its principles of building face-to-face relationships with clients to help them understand their personal financial goals and long-term investment plans since its founding in 1922. As creators of the individual branch network model that spread across rural communities and suburbs, Edward Jones is the leader in its industry today.

More than 30,000 Edward Jones associates at over 10,000 branch locations in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom provide a wide range of brokerage services for seven million clients made up of individual investors and small business owners.

Edward Jones has been an important part of the St. Louis community since it was begun here 80 years ago. Today, nearly 3,600 St. Louis associates work at the firm’s headquarters in Des Peres or the Maryland Heights campus.

Additionally, Edward Jones has 350 branch offices in the region, with one financial advisor and one branch office administrator in each branch.

The Des Peres headquarters main functions are products and services, marketing, legal, accounting, research, trust and banking services, financial advisor development, human resources and compliance, while training and information systems are performed in the Maryland Heights location.

In a time when many companies are downsizing, Edward Jones is growing its business in a way that directly impacts the St. Louis community with new jobs, new construction and new economic development opportunities.

The recent completion of 170 Edward Jones Boulevard is an important milestone for Edward Jones, the City of Maryland Heights and St. Louis County. In October 2006, Edward Jones announced a $391 million expansion plan in the County. The plans include construction of three new buildings at the company’s Maryland Heights campus, and a significant expansion of the headquarters building in Des Peres. The expansion will allow Edward Jones to create at least 500 new jobs by 2011 and 1,000 by 2016.

On the technology front, Edward Jones has some big projects in the works that will allow the company to process trades faster than ever before and let financial advisors work more efficiently with their clients.

One major effort is the new $200 million Global Branch Network. Edward Jones Managing Partner Jim Weddle describes it as the backbone of the entire technology system that connects the home office with every one of the 12,000 financial advisors.

“Our new Global Branch Network provides an amazingly fast, very reliable system where we can deliver significantly enhanced functionality to our advisors and better meet the needs of our individual investors,” Weddle says.

“We also have a significant number of new technology tools, including a full suite of financial planning software that helps our advisors collect and organize information and put it into a financial plan to help investors, along with a new relationship manager tool now being rolled out. These tools have made a big difference in productivity in each of our branch offices,“Weddle explains.

Weddle notes that another important technology tool is online account access for clients. Clients can access their accounts anytime to check their account status and look at the value of their investments.

But it has always been the personal touch that sets Edward Jones apart, Weddle points out. “The relationship between our financial advisors and their individual investors is the differentiating factor between Edward Jones and many of our competitors. Our investment in technology is very important for us and makes it possible for our financial advisors to deliver an excellent level of service, but it’s always been the face-to-face contact that sets us apart,” Weddle says.

It’s that kind of personal service that puts Edward Jones high on many rankings, including Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, where the company has been listed nine times and was ranked No. 4 this year. In addition, JD Power and Associates has repeatedly recognized the company with “Highest in Investor Satisfaction.”

Giving back has always been part of the culture at Edward Jones and the company is civically involved on many levels. Two major organizations that the company supports are the United Way and the Arts & Education Council. Edward Jones contributed $3.4 million to this year’s United Way campaign, up 8 percent over last year. In addition, Weddle says the firm supports many of the philanthropic activities in which local branches are involved.

What’s ahead for the firm? Weddle says he expects Edward Jones to prosper and grow through all kinds of economic conditions.

“Edward Jones has been here through the bull markets and the bear markets,” Weddle says. “We are a privately-held firm owned by the men and women who work at Edward Jones. We treat our financial advisors as partners in the business, and that makes it possible for us to take a long-term approach and continue to grow.”
