No matter what part of the country, successful metro areas share at least one thing in common: they’ve found a way to effectively connect geographically dispersed metropolitan areas into an overall community. This issue of St. Louis Commerce explores how St. Louis is “Creating a Connected Community” —the theme of this month’s magazine—building a unified, dy-namic region.

Connectedness underlies the theme of each of the articles in this month’s edition of St. Louis Commerce.

These connections are created as the business community determines and responds to the region’s most critical needs and addresses them with a united voice. That’s the basis of the RCGA’s “Shaping A Greater St. Louis” long-term regional strategy and its seven key initiatives: revitalizing the region’s center city, creating industry clusters, bolstering regional infrastructure, enhancing the work force, growing the regional economy, encouraging community capitalism and Forward Metro St. Louis, which advances a unified public policy agenda for the bi-state region.

Whether an article is about bridges or retaining jobs or creating new ones, legislative agendas, vibrant social and entertainment dynamics, accessible, high quality cultural amenities, or affordable housing, each is part of the same virtuous circle working to turn the region’s assets into competitive advantages.

In addition, the subject of this month’s profile is ’04 Eve, the launch of “Celebrate 2004.” Presented by St. Louis 2004, ’04 Eve will be the biggest New Year’s Eve party the St. Louis region has ever seen.

The world’s largest Ferris wheel, a live illuminated performance by LUMA, live music by The Samples, a nationally-known DJ, fireworks and exciting entertainment and special activities by area cultural attractions will ring in 2004 at this free community-wide celebration in Forest Park. Thanks to Senator Jack Danforth, St. Louis 2004 President Peter Sortino, their 2004 staff, colleagues and volunteers and sponsors for their gift of the ’04 Eve celebration to the citizens of our region.

This event is sponsored by: Bank of America, AmerenUE, Citigroup, Boeing, E. Desmond Lee, Metro, Energizer, BJC Health Care, Schlafly and Ronnoco Coffee, the official coffee of Celebrate 2004. In-kind contributions are being provided by: City of St. Louis, Arts In Transit, Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of St. Louis, Nestlé PURINA, Guarantee Electrical Company, BSI Constructors, Kwame Building Group, Premier Productions, St. Louis Community College, Washington University, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Children’s Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Prosperous New Year in 2004 for all of our St. Louis Commerce Magazine readers.
