Laclede Group
is a name known by most people in the St. Louis region—the public
utility provides natural gas to approximately 2 million customers
in the St. Louis metropolitan area, as well as operates underground
natural gas storage fields and transports and stores liquid propane.
The company’s financials are impressive. In fiscal 2001 its operating
revenues were just under $1 billion, net income was $30.5 million,
and earnings per share were $1.61.
Laclede’s Leader is chairman, president and CEO, Doug
Yaeger, who has been with this venerable corporation in a variety
of positions since 1990.
He is dedicated not only to his company, but also to the region.
He’s the incoming chairman of the board of the RCGA, and serves
on boards at the Boy Scouts of America St. Louis Council, the St.
Louis Science Center, Central Institute for the Deaf, Harris-Stowe
State College, Webster University and the Muny.
This month’s cover story explores this native St. Louisan’s background
in the industry, his life at Laclede and insight into the intricacies
of running such a complex company.
Also making a difference in the region is founder and president
of Trivers Associates, Andy Trivers, the subject of this
month’s profile by Pam Droog. Specializing in historic renovation
of a number of St. Louis’ most cherished landmarks, Trivers has
made his mark on projects such as the historic Old Post Office,
Westin Hotel at Cupples Station, the just completed Continental
Building in midtown, the Allen Market Lane Apartments in Soulard,
the Chemical Building and Court Square downtown and numerous others.
In other St. Louis Commerce news, a story entitled State
Colleges Feel Budget Cuts, writer Bob Schaper explores how higher
education institutions are coping with less funding. (Last year
lawmakers slashed nearly $300 million from the Department of Higher
Education’s $975 million budget.)
Also of interest is Commercial Real Estate Women—Leadership
and 20 Years of Vision. The story by Peter Downs identifies
some of the women who are recognized locally and nationally. The
women featured are: Patricia Nooney, senior vice president
of American Spectrum Realty, Inc., president-elect of the national
Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM); Lynn Schenck,
vice president of Grubb & Ellis/Krombach Partners, who is set to
become the first woman president of the Society of Industrial and
Office Realtors; Marian Nunn, chief operating officer of
THF Realty, Inc.; Diane Davis, vice president of planning
and operations for The DESCO Group; and Wendy Timm, chief
operating officer and chief financial officer of Conrad Properties.
The article explores how these women found their niche in commercial
real estate and how they have found ways to excel in an industry
once virtually the province of men.
Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Prosperous New Year for all
of our St. Louis Commerce Magazine readers.
