Plain Dealer Touts St. Louis’ Biobelt Plant and Life Sciences
Initiative
In less than 18 months since its launch, the BioBelt is already
prompting other regions throughout the nation to sit up and take
notice of St. Louis' plant and life sciences efforts.
In recent months, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the Boston
Herald, Des Moines Register, San Diego Union-Tribune,
The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post have
all examined the St. Louis region’s biotech initiative. The latest
accolade comes from the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which featured
a story in the Sunday, October 14, issue.
The article, “St. Louis Learns, Leapfrogs Over Cleveland in Efforts
to Market Itself,” examines how Cleveland is trying to position
itself nationally as a high-tech center. Plain Dealer reporters
Bob Paynter and Marcia Pledger recall the inaugural RCGA St. Louis
Regional Leadership Exchange to Cleveland in 1996, noting that the
St. Louis delegates were impressed by Cleveland’s civic leadership.
As these reporters note, “In the last half decade, however, the
tales of the two cities have changed: Today, the ‘Comeback City’
could well be taking choir lessons from the Gateway to the West.”
The story touts St. Louis’ BioBelt brand as a model for Cleveland,
noting that St. Louis was the only region to place an ad in the
Fortune Magazine supplement on biotechnology that was distributed
at the BIO 2001 meeting for 15,000 industry leaders this past summer
in San Diego; St. Louis’ plant and life sciences venture capital
successes; and its effective partnership between regional life sciences
employers and university research assets.
University Café Featured in Building Interiors
Ursa’s Café
at Washington University not only won a 2001 Interior Design Award
from Building Interiors, the Café was featured on the cover
of the magazine’s August issue. Mackey Mitchell Associates, along
with environmental design firm Ten8 Group, pulled together a space
with two personalities—one for work and one for play.
Referring to the design as “night club meets library,” Building
Interiors describes Ursa’s Café as a place for activities such
as shooting pool and watching ball games on TV as well as a place
for sipping coffee and studying. The Café also includes a “cyber
lounge” with iMac computers and data ports throughout the space,
allowing students to work on papers, do online research or send
email messages.

This kitchen in a 98-year-old Webster Groves home earned Thomas
Construction an honorable mention award from Qualified Remodeler
magazine.
Qualified Remodeler (QR) magazine has named Thomas Construction
Inc. in the publication’s 23rd annual Master Design Awards Contest.
The magazine sponsors remodeling projects in 13 categories. Thomas
Construction earned an Honorable Mention in the Kitchens Below $75,000
category.
Nominees are residential remodeling companies from across the country.
Entries are evaluated on aesthetic appeal, construction techniques,
value of project, functionality of space and overall impression
of project. This year six judges awarded 44 companies’ projects.
Thomas Construction’s award project is a new kitchen design and
installation for a 98-year-old house in Webster Groves. The home’s
age presented structural and design challenges, including a three-inch
disparity in floor elevation between the planned kitchen area and
the original kitchen. The new kitchen is an open design with hardwood
floors, white cabinets and black marble countertops.
Thomas Construction, ranked 16th in Qualified Remodeler’s
Top 500 Home Improvement Companies nationwide, has been serving
the Metro St. Louis area since 1971. The company has grown to include
300 employees. |
