In what has become an annual tradition in the St. Louis area, 125 regional leaders participated in the RCGA’s Community Leadership Exchange. The St. Louis delegates met with more than 60 of their Denver counterparts during the three-day visit.
While the overriding purpose of these trips is to build the momentum of a regional community here, there are a number of “tangibles” that have come out of these visits. The first Leadership Exchange to Cleveland in 1996 provided examples of how the public and private sectors in that community joined together to revitalize their downtown; St. Louis-based developer Richard Baron traces the inspiration for the Jefferson Elementary School to the Cleveland visit. Much of what is contained in St. Louis’ Downtown Now! plan traces its roots to Cleveland. Knowledge gained during the visit to Seattle with Bill Gates, Jr. in 1997 led directly to the creation of St. Louis’ highly successful Technology Gateway Alliance. Last year’s trip to Baltimore gave regional leaders here ideas for riverfront redevelopment and for “community capitalism,” a concept that advocates for-profit, business-driven investment and job creation in inner cities and nurturing minority-owned and women-owned businesses. Studying and adopting some of the “best practices” of other regions will help our region reach its full potential.
