UMB Deploys RemitPro Remote Bank Deposit System

UMB Payment & Tech-nology Solutions, a division of UMB Financial Corpora-tion, has implemented an Internet-based system that goes beyond scanning checks and making deposits to integrate captured information with accounts-receivable systems.

RemitPro, a self-contained system with audit controls and workflow reporting, features a more reliable, informative deposit process, scans and converts items automatically to image transactions without user intervention, and reduces the need for nightly courier runs or costly expedited shipments to make cutoff deadlines.

New Ticket and Baggage Handling System Operating at Lambert

A $5 million automated baggage handling system for the East Terminal at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is checking screen checked luggage for explosives directly from the conveyor belt.

Burns & McDonnell engineered and designed the system’s two new screening devices, which work similarly to MRI equipment. Each device automatically screens 450 suitcases an hour, eliminating the need for workers to lift luggage off the conveyor belt for screening. The system is expected to significantly speed up the baggage screening process, with an aim toward allowing Lambert to open new ticket counters for additional charter aircraft flights.

Wash U to Invest $55 Million in Renewable Energy Research

Washington University is creating an International Center for Advanced Renewable Energy and Sustainability (I-CARES). The center will encourage and coordinate university-wide and external collaborative research in the areas of renewable energy and sustainability—including biofuels, CO2 mitigation and coal-related issues.

The investment includes $40 million for a building to house I-CARES and related research projects. The initiative will fund five new endowed professorships in science, engineering, architecture, social science or medicine to attract research leaders in energy, environment and sustainability. At least $2.5 million over five years will be devoted to seed and develop collaborative research within the university and with its regional partners through I-CARES.
