INVESTING IN THE REGION

By Debra Solomon Baker

Dr. Mark Lombardi
president,
Maryville University

Cardinal Nation has just added one more player to its roster.

Before Dr. Mark Lombardi had even finished unpacking his boxes at his new residence, the president’s home at Maryville University, he had already declared himself a devoted fan of the Cardinals and of their hometown.

Lombardi has only been at the helm for a few weeks (he began as President on July 1st), but he already has a clear vision for the University.

Leading with humor and with good-natured communication, he plans to raise public awareness about Maryville and will build on its tradition of educating students well prepared for their careers. He sees Maryville as an institution that is “on the rise” and expects that it will grow both in size and in academic programming.

Lombardi also plans to expand programs whereby Maryville students can serve the community at-large.

“Maryville is going to be a very active participant and player in the St. Louis community,” he says. “We are here to serve, to make this a better place to live.”

Lombardi believes that developing strong partnerships between Maryville and the business community is a key factor in successful programming. He is particularly interested in a joint venture between Maryville and the biotechnology industry.

“We need to know what skills companies are looking for and to work with business and industry to design curriculum,” he says.

During Lombardi’s first 18 months in his former position, as president and CEO at the College of Santa Fe, he was responsible for raising $14.7 million. During his tenure there, he engineered a complete revision of the core curriculum, greatly improved the retention rate of students, and oversaw significant upgrades to its physical plant, as well as its information technology infrastructure.

He also recognizes that, with the new generation of technology, higher education is in the midst of a revolution. However, he describes himself as someone who is able to look beyond the horizon.

“We have to be quick and nimble to adapt to the different ways that students are learning today,” he says. “The challenge always is making sure that all of the elements are operating at peak efficiency and to see that we are on the cutting edge.

“Like the CEO of any company, my job is to make sure that all of the pieces fit together.”

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

What book, professional or otherwise, would you Most strongly recommend to colleagues as they head off on their summer vacations?

Band of Brothers. This book not only chronicles the WWII action of Easy Company 506 PIR 101st Airborne, but details true leadership—a quality that all CEO's must exude in order to guide, energize and excite their associates.”

The World is Flat should be on your ‘must read’ list for the summer. Author Thomas Friedman presents an enlightening view of the globalized world in which we live.”
