Officials from the State of Missouri,
St. Louis County, the City of Berkeley and the RCGA cut the ribbon on June 16 for the new Centocor Biologics campus in Berkeley. Centocor, which also celebrated its 25th anniversary at the event, formally closed on its acquisition of the St. Louis manufacturing facility from Wyeth BioPharma in April.
This acquisition retains some 300 prized advanced manufacturing biotech jobs in St. Louis—with an additional 200 to 300 possible —and marks the entry into the St. Louis BioBelt by Johnson & Johnson, Centocor’s parent company. RCGA Chief Economist Bryan Bezold projects Centocor’s 300 jobs’ annual economic impact to the region will be $53 million. A modest increase in jobs to 450 would raise the impact to $80 million per year, and growing the plant to its full capacity of 600 employees would have an annual impact of $107 million for the region.
