MART COMES TO LIFE AGAIN
New life has been given to the Merchandise Mart and RCGA members
gathered at a recent Business After Hours to take a look at its
revitalization. More than 250 RCGA members mingled where generations
of St. Louisans once found the finest Merchandise.
Now a new generation of residents find home in the meticulously
restored late 19th century landmark, which now features 212 one-
and two-bedroom apartments, one three-bedroom apartment and 10,000
square feet of street-level retail.
The most imposing building on Washington Avenue has a footprint
of nearly an acre. Its redevelopment represents a $47 million investment.
The renovation was completed in December 2002 and the first resident
moved in in January.
On hand at the event were Ron Silverman, senior vice president and
regional manager for Historic Restoration Inc.; Lou DiRienzo, president
of Sage Solutions, LLC (volunteer venue chair on the Business After
Hours committee); Dick Fleming, president and CEO of the RCGA; RCGA
Vice Chair Membership Michael E. Zychinski and Office Managing Partner,
Deloitte & Touche.

ARCHITECTURAL TRIUMPH. RCGA Business After Hours
attendees saw first hand HRI’s expertise at blending
old with new. The original building, which is on the
National Register of Historic Places, was constructed
in 1889 for tobacco magnets John Liggett and George
Myers. |
