Arts, Business & Cultural Committee Spotlights Art’s Economic Role
Above:
The Saint Louis Art Museum is indicative of the region’s wealth
and diversity of the arts and cultural organizations spotlighted
by the new RCGA Arts, Business & Cultural Committee.
The RCGA’s new Arts, Business and Cultural Committee will promote
awareness of the diversity and quality of St. Louis regional arts
and cultural organizations, their importance to the region, and
the extent to which they need and deserve the support of the business
community and the public. The Committee will highlight the role
of arts and culture in attracting both tourism and knowledge-based
companies and talent to the St. Louis region.
The committee will focus on creating a baseline economic impact
of the Arts and Cultural institutions collectively and individually
that can be used as a benchmark year over year. A national study
was completed recently in which St. Louis fared extremely well.
This study was undertaken by Americans for the Arts, the National
Endowment for the Arts, and 90 participating community arts organizations
(including the Regional Arts Commission). According to the study,
77 non-profit arts and cultural institutions in St. Louis City and
County generated more than $449 million for the St. Louis regional
economy in 2000.
The study also shows that in its category, which is “Markets with
a Population Greater than One Million,” St. Louis ranked #1 in total
non-profit arts industry spending, ahead of such arts leaders as
Houston, Miami, Phoenix and San Diego. Further, St. Louis ranks
highest in number of volunteers. St. Louis placed second in state
and local government revenues, such as license fees and taxes, with
$38.5 million.
Charles MacKay, General Director of the Opera Theatre of Saint
Louis and a member of the RCGA Board, is serving as Chair of the
Committee.
The Committee includes a mix of business, cultural and arts sector
leaders, a sampling of whom include: Jim Weidman, President
of the Arts and Education Council; new Saint Louis Zoo President
and CEO Jeffrey Bonner; Saint Louis Art Museum Director Brent
Benjamin; Ron Himes, founder and Producing Director of
the St. Louis Black Rep; St. Louis Science Center President and

of the Missouri Botanical Garden; Randy Adams, President
of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra; Sally Bliss, Executive
Director of Dance St. Louis; Lori Stein, Director of the
