Area (left in the background) in north St. Louis County before spilling
into the Mississippi River above the sandy Duck Island. This June,
Byrne & Jones Construction Co. began building a scenic overlook
at the confluence of the rivers, as well as other improvements to
the conservation area.
Byrne & Jones Construction Co. is targeting a year-end completion
for the first phase of the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area at
the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The $2.85
million project will create roads, structures and public use facilities
for the 4,318-acre conservation area along a flood plain in northeast
St. Louis County.
“The Columbia Bottom Conservation Area will help celebrate the upcoming
2004 bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark Expedition,” says Shannon
Cave, outreach and education director for the Missouri Department
of Conservation. “In addition to outdoor recreational activities,
a large viewing stand will give the public unobstructed views of
the planned May 2004 reenactment of the epic journey as the explorers
entered the mouth of the Missouri River.”
The department of conservation purchased the land from the city
of St. Louis in 1997. The area includes more than 6.5 miles of river
frontage, 800 acres of forest, a 110-acre island, 3,300 acres of
cropland and views of the merging of America’s two largest rivers.
