Bi-State
Congressional Delegation Finds “Common Ground” on Issues Benefitting
St. Louis Region

Committee, who was instrumental in securing the Vice President to
speak to the St. Louis delegation.
In June, RCGA Chairman John Bachmann led 115 St. Louis regional
business, civic and elected leaders to Washington for individual
meetings with each member of the regional Congressional delegation,
as part of the RCGA’s 7th Annual Washington, D.C. Legislative Leadership
Trip.
This day-long fly-in was a unique opportunity to communicate directly
with the entire bi-state Congressional delegation on a number of
issues of concern to the St. Louis region. While Missouri’s four
U.S. Senators and seven U.S. Congressmen comprise a mix of Republicans,
Democrats, conservative and liberal perspectives, what represented
“common ground” for these 11 members of the Congressional delegation
was St. Louis itself as a single region.
These leaders from diverse backgrounds were united in their support
of critical issues such as: Federal Funding for a new Mississippi
River Bridge; Pension Reform; Federal Funding to move forward on
the Chouteau’s Lake Redevelopment proposal; and Federal Historic
Tax Credits and Brownfields Legislation.
The St. Louis metro area is fortunate to have a Congressional delegation
focus on these key issues, which will help shape the regional economy
and quality of life. Following up on what was a major win for the
Illinois members of the RCGA’s Congressional delegation, U.S. Sen.
Dick Durbin (D-IL) astutely noted that the decision by Boeing
to relocate its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago enhances
an already significant Boeing presence in the eyes of the bi-state
Congressional delegation.
In addition to these sessions with members of the State’s Congressional
delegation, Vice President Dick Cheney presented an in-depth
energy policy briefing at a special White House meeting.
