RCGAction The Monthly Newsletter and Planning Calendar of the St. Louis RCGA “BIO” and Beyond—St. Louis and Missouri Officials Market Region at “BIO” 2001 Event The RCGA, the Technology Gateway Alliance and a variety of our economic development partners including Missouri Gov. Bob Holden spent a very successful four days in San Diego in late June marketing the region as the BioBelt, the Center of Plant and Life Sciences to the more than 15,000 people attending the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) 2001 International Conference and Exhibition. In less than a year, with strong volunteer efforts and a modest amount of resourcing, marketing initiatives such as the BIO conference and others have resulted in much favorable BioBelt press including coverage in The Wall Street Journal, Public Radio International (PRI) of London, the Voice of America, the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the San Diego Union-Tribune, which published a map of the U.S. showing the nation’s top plant and life science centers, all of which were on the east and west coasts except for the BioBelt. Plans are already underway to further increase the region’s visibility at the BIO 2002 conference in Toronto next June.
