Knight Joins
the DESCO Group as VP

Gwen Knight has joined the DESCO Group as vice president
with responsibilities for the firm’s corporate services, real estate
consulting and new business development. Knight was associated with
Paragon Group for almost 20 years, serving as regional vice president.
Most recently she was a partner in Enhanced Value Strategies.
Started in 1993, the DESCO Group provides corporate real estate
services, development, brokerage, property management and construction
management services. The St. Louis-based firm is active in Missouri,
Illinois, Kansas, Indiana and Louisiana. DESCO’s 45-member staff
manages, leases and provides corporate services at 157 retail, office
and manufacturing properties totaling 10.6 million square feet.
Clarke Promoted to Executive VP at Horner & Shifrin
Horner & Shifrin Inc., an engineering, architecture and planning
firm with offices in St. Louis and Fairview Heights, has promoted
William (Bill) Clarke, P.E., to executive vice president.
Clarke joined Horner & Shifrin in 1979 as vice president–design
operations. In his new role, Clarke will continue to be responsible
for financial performance and management of new and on-going projects
for the firm. In addition, he directs personnel recruiting and is
chairman of the Horner & Shifrin Strategic Planning Committee.
Founded 68 years ago, Horner & Shifrin employs 90 professionals
and technical support personnel. The firm primarily provides services
to municipal, state and federal government agencies, industries
and institutions.
Jones to Head Kwame Constructors

Kwame Building Group Inc. has named Edward Jones director
of operations for Kwame Constructors. The construction management
firm launched Kwame Constructors earlier this year.
Jones has more than 15 years of experience in the local construction
industry. He has been with Kwame Building Group for five years,
most recently as project manager. Jones’ major projects have included
project engineer for the Lambert–St. Louis International Airport
East Terminal expansion and assistant resident engineer for the
St. Clair MetroLink expansion.
Four Appointed to Commerce Bank Community Board
Commerce Bank Central Region Community Board has four new members
with the appointment of Hugh Bissell, Daniel Leach,
Lisa McLaughlin and Carl Rausch.
Bissell is president of the Hugh Bissell Insurance Co. in Kirkwood.
He has been a State Farm agent since 1974.
Leach is president of the P.M. Leach Painting Co. in Fenton. He
joined the company in 1984 as the estimator.
McLaughlin is a partner in the law firm Lewis, Rice and Fingersh.
Previously, she was a senior vice president of private banking at
Bank of America and a partner at Bryan Cave LLP.
President of Lutheran Senior Services, Rausch is also a CPA. He
has been with the organization for more than 15 years.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri Promotes Three
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri has announced three promotions.
Stuart Campbell is now senior vice president of finance and
Mary Lou Redshaw is senior vice president of client services.
In addition, Karen Brobeck has been promoted to vice president
of client services.
Campbell has been with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri since
1994. Most recently he was senior vice president of client services.
Previously Campbell was a senior manager of the insurance industry
services group at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He is a Certified Public
Accountant and earned his MBA from Washington University.
Redshaw joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri in 1970 and
has served in many roles during her 30 years with the company. Her
most recent position was vice president of client services.
Brobeck has been with the health care benefits company since 1984,
beginning her career as an auditor. Most recently she was site manager
for the Cape Girardeau office and manager of enrollment services
and billing.
Dr. Brady Receives Community Service Award

The Missouri State Medical Association presented its 2001 Citizenship
and Community Service Award to Harry Brady, M.D.
Dr. Brady developed and maintains a free eye clinic for homeless
individuals who have no insurance and no access to routine health
services. Located at the Saint Louis University Eye Institute, “The
Brady Eye Clinic” began in 1998. The clinic receives referrals from
nurses or social workers at various shelters. Dr. Brady sees up
to eight patients one afternoon each week. He personally conducts
exams and provides new glasses at no charge.
Mueller Optical and Marchon Eyewear underwrite part of the expenses
for Dr. Brady’s clinic. When a patient requires surgical care, he
arranges for the surgeon and facility for the proper procedure.
In addition to the Missouri State Medical Association Award, Dr.
Brady also received the American Medical Association’s Pride in
the Profession honorable mention for service to the St. Louis Community.
Academy of Science Celebrates Regional Science and Technology
Achievements
Celebrating
“The Best of the Best,” the Academy of Science St. Louis presented
its 2001 Outstanding St. Louis Scientists Awards at a dinner in
April. In addition to the awards presentation, the dinner featured
guest speaker Shirley Malcom, Ph.D., director of education and human
resources at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The Trustees Award, recognizing dedication
to the Academys mission of improving scientific literacy,
went to Ernest Jaworski, Ph.D., scientist-in-residence
at St. Louis Science Center and a biotechnology pioneer
at Monsanto.
Peter H. Raven Lifetime Award, recognizing
a distinguished career in science, was shared by Jerome
Cox, Jr., Sc.D., Washington University computer science,
for the application of advanced technology to solve practical
biomedical problems, and Robert Murray, Ph.D., curators
professor emeritus, University of MissouriSt. Louis
chemistry department, for research in organic chemistry
that applies to air pollution, corrosion and human disease.

Fellows Award, recognizing an active
career in science and/or teaching, was shared by Christopher
Byrnes, Ph.D., Washington University, dean of the School
of Engineering and Applied Science, and chair of the Technology
Gateway Alliance, for applications of mathematics to aerospace,
electrical systems, signal speech processing and speech
synthesis; and Dennis Choi, M.D., Ph.D., Washington
University School of Medicine, chief neurologist at Barnes-Jewish
Hospital, for studies of mechanisms that cause nerve cell
death in disease and for developing therapies to treat brain
and spinal chord injuries.

James B. Eads Award, presented for the first time
in 2001, recognizes innovation in engineering, technology
or a project of major national impact, went to Richard
Bucholz, M.D., F.A.C.S., neurosurgeon at Saint Louis

YMCA of Greater St. Louis Elects New Metro Board Chair
The 42-member Metropolitan Board of Directors for YMCA of Greater
St. Louis has elected John Dunham as its new chairman. Dunham is
president of May Department Stores Co. Dunham has volunteered on
the YMCA board since 1996, serves as a division chairman in the
YMCA Partner Campaign, and chaired the Partner Campaign in 1999.
Founded in 1853, the not-for-profit YMCA of Greater St. Louis has
20 branches and more than 450 program sites across the area. This
year, more than 8,000 YMCA volunteers and 2,600 staff will serve
more than half-a-million community participants through programs
such as fitness, child care, youth sports and Teen Leaders Clubs.
Hakenwerth Promoted to VP at Bi-State Fire Protection

Bi-State Fire Protection Corp. of St. Charles recently promoted
Tony Hakenwerth to vice president of design and project management.
Hakenwerth joined Bi-State Fire Protection five years ago. His responsibilities
include assigning client projects to Bi-State designers as well
as project management for each Bi-State job.
For more than 20 years, Bi-State Fire Protection Corporation has
been designing, fabricating, installing and maintaining fire protection
systems for retrofit and new construction of commercial, industrial
and residential projects.
St. Louis Bar Association Installs Bay as President; Elects Other
Officers
William Bay, a partner with the firm Thompson Coburn LLC, was installed
as president of The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL)
for 2001-2002 at the Association’s Law Day in May.
Bay’s practice in Thompson Coburn’s litigation area includes experience
in representation and trial of commercial and tort cases. He is
a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.
In addition, BAMSL elected Joan Swartz, an attorney in private practice
as president-elect. She will succeed Bay as president, May 1, 2002.
Howard Shalowitz was elected BAMSL vice president. Lori
Jones an attorney with Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, LC, is the association’s
secretary; Marie Kenyon, treasurer; and Dennis Capriglione,
ABA delegate. Also, five BAMSL members were elected to the Board
of Governors: Robert Babione, Simone Haberstock, Stan
Platke, Virginia Rice, and Lynn Ann Whaley.
Tracing its roots to 1874, BAMSL is a professional association of
more than 6,500 lawyers and judges.
Midwest BankCentre Names Grimmer as CFO

Richard Grimmer has joined Midwest BankCentre as chief financial
officer. He brings 27 years of experience in managing and leading
financial functions in the banking industry. He was associated with
Bank of America, St. Louis, and its predecessors, NationsBank and
Boatmen’s Bancshares, from 1973 to 2000. Most recently, Grimmer
served as senior vice president of finance for the Bank of America’s
Midwest Region.
Founded in 1906, locally-owned Midwest BankCentre operates seven
locations in the St. Louis region. Prior to January 2000, the bank
was known as Lemay Bank & Trust Co.
Shannon Named Partner at Grace Advisors

at the firm. A professional with more than 20 years of experience,
Shannon has been with Grace since 1994 and served as a principal

office and specializes in financial, tax and estate planning.

Paric Corp. Enters New Era in Company’s Third Decade

fter four years of careful planning, St. Louis-based Paric Corp.
has launched a new era of leadership with the announcement that
Joe McKee has been promoted to president and Greg Frick
to chief operating officer.
Rick Jordan, Paric president since 1984, will join Paul J.
McKee Jr. as co-chairmen of the company. McKee and Jordan founded
Paric, the nation’s 211th largest commercial contractor, in 1979.
Joe McKee, the son of Paul McKee, Jr., joined Paric full time in
1991 after working as a laborer and carpenter at Paric over high
school and college summers. After becoming a full-time employee,
he advanced through the ranks as an estimator, project manager,
chief estimator and business unit vice president. He was named executive
vice president in 1999.
Frick joined Paric in 1984 and has served in a variety of leadership
roles, most recently as executive vice president. In 1998, Frick
was named senior vice president of interior construction after serving
as vice president of the business unit since 1987. He was promoted
to executive vice president in 1999, the same year he opened Paric’s
regional office in Dallas, Texas.
CID Names Armstrong as Board President
Central Institute for the Deaf (CID) has named Theodore (Ted) Armstrong
president of its board of managers. Armstrong, senior vice president
and chief financial officer of Angelica Corp., replaces Robert Clark,
chairman and CEO of Clayco Construction Co. as CID board president.
Armstrong joined CID’s board of managers in 1986 and has served
as assistant treasurer for the past three years. Also, he has chaired
the finance committee and served as a member of the executive, investment,
compensation, planning, campus oversight, facilities and real estate
committees.
The board of managers plus a seven-member leadership team governs
CID, which is currently conducting a $32 million capital campaign
for renovations and expansion at its campus. In February, CID opened
its new Harold W. Siebens Hearing Research Center, Phase II of the
campus construction project.
U.S. News & World Report recently listed the CID graduate program
in audiology within the nation’s top 10. CID-developed evaluations
and curricula are now used in all 50 states, all provinces of Canada
and 33 countries throughout the world.
CASE Chooses Biondi as Chief Exec of the Year

Lawrence Biondi, SJ, Saint Louis University President, received
the Chief Executive Leadership Award for District VI of the Council
for Advancement and Support of Education.
The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) selected
Saint Louis University President Lawrence Biondi, SJ, to
receive the Chief Executive Leadership Award for CASE District VI.
Biondi accepted the award during the CASE International Assembly
2001 in San Francisco during the summer.
Based in Washington, DC, CASE is a nonprofit education association
serving 28,000 professionals at member institutions. The mid-America
district of the association recognizes one chief executive annually
who demonstrates abilities to create vision, inspire staff, and
increase the institution’s image in and service to the community.
