Many national publications have recognized St. Louis as a high-tech
hotbed. In June, Congressman Dick Gephardt convened a full-day
national “Technology Summit” at t he
St. Louis Science Center to showcase St. Louis’ growing reputation
for Internet, telecommunications, and other high-tech startups,
and to establish ongoing relationships with these national technology
leaders as the St. Louis region furthers its information technology,
Internet and telecom industry cluster. The Summit featured nationally-prominent
high-tech CEOs, such as Excite@Home CEO George Bell; SBC
Communications CEO Ed Whitacre; AT & T CEO Mike Armstrong;
Vulcan Ventures President Bill Savoy; Cisco Systems Chairman
John Morgridge; along with executives from several other
national firms and CEOs from nearly 40 area technology firms and
regionwide education leaders.
Dick Fleming, president & CEO of the RCGA kicked off the
Summit with a status report on high-technology growth in the region,
sharing the findings of a just-completed analysis of the St. Louis
regional workforce by Paragon Decision Resources p.37.
RCGA Board members Karen Carroll, Vice President and General
Manager of KMOX Radio, and Dr. Blanche Touhill, Chancellor
of the University of Missouri at St. Louis, moderated the two
morning sessions, followed by a keynote luncheon address at the
Compton Drew Middle School by U.S. Secretary of Commerce William
Daley.
