Both Washington University and Saint Louis University elect new chairmen of their boards
The boards of directors of both Saint Louis University and Washington University have announced the elections of new chairmen of the boards of the Universities. J. Joseph Adorjan, chairman of Borg-Warner Security Corporation, has been elected to a four-year term as chairman of the Saint Louis University board of trustees; John McDonnell, retired chairman of the board of McDonnell Douglas Corporation, was elected chairman of the Washington University board of trustees.
Adorjan served on the SLU board from 1985 to 1997, holding the position of chairman for six years. He retired from the board in 1997 and was re-elected in 1998. Prior to his present position at Borg-Warner, he was chairman and chief executive officer of Esco Electronics from 1990 to 1993. He also served as president of Emerson Electric from 1993 to 1995. Adorjan received his bachelors degree and masters degree in business administration from SLU. He succeeds Michael Shanahan, chairman and CEO of Engineered Air Systems, Inc., as chairman.
John Cook was also elected to the SLU board of trustees. Cook is chairman and chief executive officer of The Profit Recovery Group International Inc., and is a graduate of the University.
McDonnell was elected to the Washington U. board in 1976, and has held several key positions; he served two terms on the executive committee and was named vice chair in 1995. McDonnell has also been a member of the Arts and Sciences National Council since 1991 and was a founding member of the International Advisory Council for Asia, on which he has served since 1997. McDonnell began his career at McDonnell Douglas in 1962 as a strength engineer and held a number of key positions spanning four decades. He earned a bachelors and masters degree in aeronautical engineering from Princeton University.
The trustees of Washington U. also elected two new members to the board: Eugene Kahn, president and CEO of the May Department Stores Company, and Michael Sears, senior vice president and president of the Military Aircraft and Missile Systems Group of the Boeing Company. Re-elected after completing a mandatory year off the board were David Farrell, former chairman and chief executive officer of the May Department Stores Company, and Richard Ford, managing general partner of Gateway Associates LP.
St. Lukes Hospital announces management changes
The board of directors of St. Lukes Hospital has elected Gary Olson to serve as St. Lukes president, succeeding George Tucker, M.D. Olson will also assume the title of vice president of operations of Unity Health. Olson joined St. Lukes in 1978, and has served as executive vice president and chief operating officer at St. Lukes since 1986.

His familiarity with the mission and culture of St. Lukes, along with his considerable administrative skills, should make this a very smooth transition for everyone.
Olson is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and earned a masters degree in health administration from Washington University. He is a member of the board of directors of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and the advisory board of Commerce Bank West County, and also serves as vice president of Metro Healthcare Executives of the St. Louis Area.
Dr. Tucker has served as president since 1995; during his tenure, he oversaw St. Lukes transition from an independent hospital to a member of Unity Health. Tucker will continue as a vice president of Unity Health with primary responsibility for developing the Unity-wide cancer program.
St. Louis Community Foundation announces new board members
Four community leaders were recently appointed to the board of directors of the St. Louis Community Foundation: David Farrell, former chairman and CEO of The May Department Stores Company; Deborah Patterson, president of the Monsanto Fund and director of special responsibilities; and Albert Suter, senior vice chairman and chief administrative officer of Emerson Electric Co. The new members will serve three-year terms. In addition, Sarah Bakewell, president and CEO of Edward L. Bakewell, Inc., has joined the board to complete the term of deceased member Belle A. Cori.
The 19-member board meets throughout the year to govern the foundations activities and efforts in the areas of development, investment and grantmaking. The foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan area; programs include arts and culture, community building, community health, environment, education and human services.
Friends of KWMU, Inc. elects new officers
Public radio 90.7 KWMU recently elected new officers to its Friends of KWMU, Inc. (FOKI) board. The officers elected include: Steve Glickman, vice president of marketing for CPI Corporation, president; Mark Waldman, president of Lauries Shoes, vice president; Dudley McCarter, an attorney Behr, Mantovani, McCarter and Potter, first vice president; Mark Cook, partner for tax, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, treasurer; and Robert Fleet, director of sales, Holiday Inn South County Center, secretary.
FOKI has also announced the creation of the Donald H. Driemeier Endowment Fund, created in honor of Driemeier, deputy to the chancellor at University MissouriSt. Louis. The fund is designed to strengthen the stations financial base and all bequests and memorial gifts, unless otherwise specified, will be added to the endowment. A goal of one million dollars has been established. Currently more than 89 percent of the stations operating budget comes from individual and corporate gifts.
The purpose of FOKI is to provide fund-raising support for KWMU and to promote community awareness of the station. Public radio station KWMU is affiliated with National Public Radio (NPR) and Public Radio International (PRI), and is a service of the University of MissouriSt. Louis.
Metropolitan Design & Building Co. Inc. adds director of sales and marketing
Metropolitan Design and Building Co. Inc., a St. Louis-based commercial and residential design/build firm, has announced the addition of Joseph Jordan III as vice president of sales and marketing. Jordan will be primarily responsible for acquiring new commercial clients and will also be active in developing commercial marketing strategies.
Prior to joining Metropolitan Design & Building, Jordan worked in sales management and marketing campaign development at two St. Louis-based full-service marketing firms. Jordan served on the YMCA board of directors from 1992 to 1995, and was also a member of Black Advertising and Marketing Professionals (BAMP) from 1995 to 1996. He is currently vice president of the RCGA Leads Group and is also actively involved with Metropolis St. Louis. Jordan earned his bachelors degree in psychology and communications from Cornell University.
Andrew Rosen elected senior vice president and treasurer of Brown Group
Andrew Rosen has been elected senior vice president and treasurer of Brown Group, Inc. Rosen will continue to be responsible for management of the companys capital structure, treasury functions, trust investments and employee benefits. In addition, he is responsible for risk management, payroll and investor relations. He serves as a member of the companys operating committee.
Rosen joined Brown Group in 1974 and has served in several corporate management positions including corporate cash manager and manager of pension benefits. He was elected treasurer in 1983 and vice president and treasurer, his most recent position, in 1992. Rosen holds a MBA from Washington University and a bachelors degree in political science from Saint Louis University.
Greg Sullivan named 1999 National Small Business Person of the Year
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently announced that Gregory A. Sullivan, founder and president of G.A. Sullivan, a St. Louis-based software development company RCGA Board Vice Chair for Technology, and chair of St. Louis Technology Gateway Alliance, has been named the 1999 National Small Business Person of the Year.
Sullivan cites specific strengths of the St. Louis region as one of the keys to his business success, in particular, its prestigious universities: Its critical for a growing technology company to have strong universities in the area committed to research, development and technology transfer, he says.
Sullivan has been named in the RCGA FAST 50 four consecutive years.
Commerce Bank announces new board appointment
Arthur Lottes III has been appointed to the Commerce Bank board of directors. Lottes is president of A.E. Lottes Co., the Carquest member serving eastern Missouri and southern Illinois.

Lottes holds a bachelors degree in finance from the University of MissouriColumbia and is active in several community organizations. John Mueller named project leader with ISI
Architectural firm ISI (Interior Space Inc.) president Patricia Whitaker announced the addition of John Mueller, RA to the ISI architectural staff. Mueller, who came to ISI from Hardy Holzman & Pfeiffer in New York, holds a bachelors of architecture degree from the University of Kansas and also attended the University of Copenhagen School of Architecture.
As a project leader, Mueller participates in all phases of the design process. Muellers current roster with ISI includes projects for Bridge Information Systems, Anheuser-Busch Co., and the new Public Safety Complex for OFallon, Ill.
Ameren names new senior vice president, customer services
The board of Ameren Corporation has elected Thomas Voss senior vice president for customer services for AmerenUE, AmerenCIPS and Ameren Services. Voss has served UE in various positions since 1969, when he joined the company as a student engineer. In 1988 Voss was promoted to manager of distribution operating. He was named vice president of region operations for AmerenCIPS in 1998.
Voss earned his bachelors degree in engineering from the University of MissouriRolla, and is also a graduate of the University of Michigans public Utility Executive Program and the Westinghouse Advanced Power Systems School in Pittsburgh. He is a registered professional engineer in Missouri and Illinois.
Tamke promoted to vice chair and co-CEO; other promotions announced at Emerson
Emerson Electric has announced that George Tamke, who was president and chief operating officer, has been promoted to vice chairman and co-chief executive officer. In addition, vice chairman James Berges has been promoted to president, and executive vice president David Farr has been promoted to senior executive vice president and chief operating officer. Both will report to Tamke. Charles Knight, who remains chairman and chief executive officer, made the announcements.
Tamke joined Emerson in 1989 as an executive vice president; he became president and a director in 1997. Prior to joining Emerson, Tamke was president of Cullinet Software Inc., and he also held several management positions during a 17-year career at International Business Machines Corp. He holds a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University and a masters degree in management from Stanford University.
Berges joined Emerson in 1976 and has held key positions in manufacturing and was also president of Emerson Specialty Motors. He was named group vice president in 1988, executive vice president in 1989 and vice chairman and director in 1997. Prior to joining Emerson, Berges held engineering and management positions at General Electric. He holds a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
Farr joined Emerson in 1981 and served as president of the Ridge Tool Division, president of Emerson Asia-Pacific and chief executive officer of Emersons Astec joint venture (which is now fully owned by Emerson). Most recently, he served as executive vice president. Farr holds a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Wake Forest University and a masters degree in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University.
