This issue of St. Louis Commerce Magazine focuses on a rapidly emerging national and international issue, namely, the green movement. Everything from the leadership roles that one of the nation's largest car rental companies, St. Louis' own Enterprise Rent-A-Car, is taking in alternative fuels and hybrid vehicles to efforts by utilities Ameren and Laclede Gas in the area of green energy and green building.
In regards to Enterprise, this month's cover story focuses on the leadership of one of our region's top CEOs, Andy Taylor, in not only being an industry leader in his industry, but also being a national and regional leader for a cleaner environment.
A thread that runs through the emerging green debate is the prospect that individual communities' and the nation's response to climate change should not only be seen in the context of responding to a problem, but could in fact represent an entire new value-added market for communities and companies. The Rockefeller Brothers Fund has recently launched an initiative called the Climate Prosperity Project—a development partnership that focuses on promoting energy independence, preventing climate change and protecting the environment by advancing the idea that innovation, efficiency and conservation in the use and reuse of resources is perhaps the best way to increase jobs, wealth, incomes, productivity, and competitiveness. As this new project references in a recent publication, quoting Ludwid Mies van der Rohe, "less is the new more."
The 105-year-old recycler, MERS/Goodwill, is featured in this issue on how the social agency is continuing to respond to conservation and adaptive reuse. There is also an article this month on how the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra is going green.
St. Louis Commerce is pleased to be a media sponsor to the Gateway to Innovation Conference, to be held at the Millennium Hotel in downtown St. Louis on April 30th. The local information technology community will gather to highlight innovation in St. Louis and the resulting opportunities that help drive business growth and improve the quality of life in the region. One of the keynote speakers is Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.
St. Louis Commerce is also pleased to be a media sponsor for the Downtown Living Tour on May 3 and May 4. The Downtown
St. Louis Partnership and Downtown St. Louis Community Improvement District sponsor two tours each year to highlight lofts, condominiums, and rental properties throughout downtown St. Louis.
"A Day in the Work Life" features public relations professional Cathy Dunkin, president and CEO of The Standing Partnership. This month's "Spotlight" features Michael Holmes, Express Scripts executive vice president and chief administrative officer, and the passion that he brings to one of our region's fastest growing Fortune 500 companies.
