A NEW MONTHLY TECHNOLOGY COLUMN FEATURING TIMELY TECH TRENDS, TIPS AND UPDATES

SPONSORED BY:

When you accept the Nobel Prize, allow us the honor of saying, “We knew him/her when...” Hired a new CIO? Let us know about it. Landed a research grant? Don’t keep it to yourself. Found a cure for the common cold? We’re all ears.

We’re looking for a few good bits, bytes and blurbs about technological developments for this new monthly column. Items need not be biotech-related, although we surmise that many will be, considering our region has been dubbed the BioBelt.

Clinical Trial Searches for Genetic Links in Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

A clinical trial will analyze plaque removed from leg arteries to search for specific biomarkers in DNA that could help researchers better understand cardiovascular disease. Begun in January at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville and headed by vascular surgeon David Finlay, M.D., the trial is the first of its kind in the St. Louis region.

At St. Elizabeth’s, one of 60 sites nationwide selected to participate, PAD patients are treated with the SilverHawk™ Plaque Removal System. Proponents say that obtaining plaque directly from patients will help accelerate the development of drugs to treat cardiovascular disease

PAD, affecting an estimated 12 million Americans, is caused by fatty deposit (plaque) build-up in the leg arteries, inhibiting blood flow to the lower extremities.

PCs, Other Obsolete Electronics Gear Broken Down, Refurbished at e-cycle St. Louis.

A new consumer electronics collection program, e-cycle St. Louis, has been developed by the St. Louis Regional Partnership for Electronics Recovery.

A grant issued in 2002 by the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District led to the formation of the St. Louis Regional Partnership for Electronics Recovery to develop a regional consumer electronics collection program that would offer a convenient and sustainable recovery program throughout the region.

With environmental safety top of mind, the task force developed a host site registration process with operating standards and auditing/reporting requirements. The firm’s E-Scrap Processing Center in Earth City is a 62,000-square-foot “de-manufacturing” facility that breaks down electronic components into plastic, steel, aluminum, circuit boards, power supplies and other elements.

Bank Midwest Awards Challenge Grant to Technology Incubator.

Technology Entrepreneur Center has received a $25,000 challenge grant from Bank Midwest. The grant is designed to be matched by funds raised through other sources and will enable the center to leverage a $50,000 commitment out of the deal. Technology Entrepreneur Center, based in downtown St. Louis, is a nonprofit incubator for start-up companies in information and communications technology. Bank Midwest has been a financial supporter of the center since its inception. For more information, contact www.tecstl.org. n

Segments From Saint Louis University.

• What’s in a Name? SLU’s intellectual property commercialization mission has expanded beyond biotechnology to embrace all innovation and IP with market value. To reflect this, last June the name was changed from the Technology Transfer Office to the Office of Innovation and Intellectual Property (OIIP).

• SLU’s Center for Obesity. CDC acknowledges SLU as the national leader in obesity programming for children. Having developed programs for children from two years old through middle school, the center focuses its efforts on urban, at-risk populations.

• OIIP Licenses Virtual Tours. Maurice Foxworth, OIIP’s associate director & head of IP licensing, traveled to London in February to negotiate a six-figure contract with the Victor & Albert Museum. Through this venture, SLU will license virtual tours of Europe’s greatest cathedrals.
