INVESTING IN THE REGION

THOMAS HOLLOWAY
president & CEO,
TheBANK of Edwardsville

After more than three decades in banking, this month marks one year since Thomas Holloway made what he calls an “energizing” professional decision. At that time, he ventured back into the community banking world, becoming the president and CEO of TheBANK of Edwardsville.

During this short time, he has found himself surrounded by a Board of Directors whom he says is eager to continue to grow the financial services franchise and an employee team that is excited to share that vision.

TheBANK, chartered in 1868, is the leading, locally owned community bank in Madison County, Ill., boasting a number-one deposit market share of 22.2 percent.

A $1 billion financial institution, TheBANK is seeking expansion opportunities both within Madison County, where there are currently 14 branches and in St. Clair County, where its second branch opened in March. Holloway expects that there will be plans in place for at least four additional branches in southwestern Illinois within the next year.

Holloway, who most recently served as president and CEO of Union Planters Bank (St. Clair, Madison & Monroe Counties), believes that banking should not just be about numbers, but, rather, about people. Thus, he is especially proud of TheBANKS’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of the communities that it serves.

“We refer to ourselves as ‘the people you know and trust’ which can only be realized by treating one another, our customers, and our communities as we ourselves would like to be treated,” says Holloway, a father of three. “I believe we do all these things very well.”

The people of Edwardsville would likely agree with him. In 2004, TheBANK made a $250,000 commitment toward the building of a new YMCA in the city.

“Our employees weave themselves into the very fabric of the communities we serve,” says Holloway.

This concern for community spreads through many aspects of Holloway’s life. One of his favorite maxims is “people don’t care how much you know until they first know how much you care.”

If his long list of civic involvements is any indication, then Holloway certainly seems to live by these words. He currently serves on a myriad of Boards, including Protestant Memorial Medical Center/Memorial Group Inc., Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois, Regional Business Council, EGHM School District #7 Foundation, and McKendree College.

He has also been recognized by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce through its Commitment to Community Award and has received the Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Belleville Exchange Club.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE INSIGHTS

Of which professional accomplishment over the past six months are you most proud of?

“My number one objective after American Airlines resized the St. Louis operation was to rebuild the commitment to the community and regain the public’s faith in American. Based on my relationships through the RCGA, a variety of other boards and organizations that I’m affiliated with, and an active engagement with our corporate accounts, I feel that goal has been accomplished. It will be an ongoing effort, but I intend to ensure it is one that I achieve!”

“The most recent professional accomplishment that I’m particularly proud of is the Community Betterment Award that was just presented to me and Koman Properties at the Missouri Growth Association’s annual luncheon. The award recognizes my continued commitment to inner city redevelopment, specifically highlighting my work on State Street Shopping Center in East St. Louis and MLK Plaza in north St. Louis, and it illustrates that my peers understand the important role that such projects have in enhancing the quality of life for residents of those communities and the other older urban areas in which we work.”
