FIVE ST. LOUIS FIRMS NAMED AMONG FORBES’ BEST BIG COMPANIES

Energizer, Sigma-Aldrich, The Laclede Group, A.G. Edwards and Emerson have been named to the “Forbes Platinum 400,” Forbes’s magazine’s list of the best big companies in America for 2004. To qualify, companies had to post at least $1 billion in revenue and receive high rankings for corporate practices, long- and short-term sales and earnings growth, and stock market performance.

Five St. Louis companies were named in the January 10 issue of Forbes magazine.

Energizer ranked highest among St. Louis firms at No. 214 with a five-year growth rate of 15.9 percent. Sigma-Aldrich also experienced a 15.9 percent growth rate and ranked No. 215. The Laclede Group had 14.0 percent growth and held the No. 240 spot. A.G. Edwards and Emerson ranked No. 332 and No. 333, respectively, with growth rates of 6.3 percent and 6.2 percent.

WEBSTER PRESIDENT'S DECADE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT IS HIGHLIGHTED

Richard S. Meyers, president of Webster University, is featured in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article by writer Susan C. Thomson for his phenomenal success at turning Webster University into a global academic presence.

The article, “Ever-Growing Webster U. Strives to Think Globally,” highlights the institution’s tremendous growth under Meyers’ guidance for the past ten years. During that time, the university’s endowment has grown from $14 million to $41 million, and the number of campus locations worldwide has increased from 48 to 103. Last fall’s enrollment stood at more than 21,000 students worldwide, making Webster Missouri’s largest private university and its second-largest overall. Thomson notes that Webster’s extensive network of campuses in the United States and abroad is what sets it apart from other universities.

“Meyers has transformed ‘normal life’ at Webster,” Thomson writes. “He has made it almost a requirement for faculty members to take occasional turns at the university’s overseas locations. He has pledged the university to pay the two-way airfare for students who want to study at any one of them. He wants, he says, ‘to create global citizens.’”

A.G. EDWARDS, MONSANTO RANK AMONG BEST COMPANIES FOR WHOM TO WORK

A.G. Edwards and Monsanto rank among the 100 best companies to work for in America, according to a FORTUNE magazine survey that appears in the January 24 issue. This year’s list marks the tenth appearance for A.G. Edwards and the second appearance for Monsanto. A.G. Edwards is also one of only 22 companies that have appeared on every “100 Best Companies to Work For in America” list since its inception in 1998.

For 2005, Monsanto was highlighted for its extensive focus on team building and employee bonding activities at its various sites. Monsanto also scored among the 10 best companies for low turnover with a voluntary turnover rate of 3.15 percent. A.G. Edwards was praised for promoting from within and for providing employees with fitness-related perks that include an indoor walking track, yoga classes and running clubs.

The list is compiled based on an evaluation of the policies and
culture of each company and on the opinions of the company’s employees. Employee opinions accounted for two-thirds of the
total score.
