PRINTING PLANT EXPANSION FOR ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH COMPLETE

Without disturbing the 24/7 printing operation, R.G. Brinkmann Construction Co. has finished a fast-track expansion of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch printing plant in Maryland Heights. The $17 million project included:

  • A 96,000-square-foot newspaper-packaging center;
  • A 14,000-square-foot newsprint storage area;
  • New offices, an employee break room, restrooms and locker space; and
  • Improved climate control for the entire facility.
“The project was fraught with extraordinary challenges,” says John Dennan, Post-Dispatch vice president of production, adding that Brinkmann had to replace deteriorating ceiling above the printing press using a special barrier to keep dust and debris out of the presses. “An item as small as a paper clip could have damaged the press cylinders,” he explains.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch continued printing operations through the expansion at their plant recently completed by R.G. Brinkmann Construction Co.

The plant expansion has allowed the daily newspaper to consolidate printing operations in St. Louis County. More than 200 employees work at the expanded facility where they print, assemble, stack and bundle papers. Currently the St. Louis Post-Dispatch prints 320,000 daily newspapers and 520,000 on Sunday.

Joining Brinkmann on the project were Ibrahim Engineering Corp., structural engineer; J.R. Grimes Consulting Engineering Inc., civil engineer; Tennill & Associates Inc., consulting engineer; Midwest Testing Inc., soil engineer; Wiegmann & Associates Inc., mechanical engineer. Major subcontractors included: PayneCrest Electric Inc., Parkway Plumbing Inc., McDaniel Fire Systems Inc., Interface Security Systems and Kehrer Brothers West Roofing.
