St. Louis
Wins Economic Development Competition for 1,900-Job National Service
Center for Magellan Health Services
In January, Governor Bob Holden, St. Louis County Executive
Buzz Westfall, Maryland Heights Mayor Michael O’Brien,
the Missouri Department of Economic Development, and the RCGA joined
Magellan Health Services President and Chief Executive Officer Daniel
Messina, Magellan Executive Vice President of Operations and
Information Technology Greg Bayer, and other Magellan officials
in announcing the retention of 1,400 existing full-time jobs and
the addition of 500 new full-time jobs to the St. Louis region.
Magellan, the nation’s leader in managed behavioral health care,
and a Fortune 1000 company, is locating its national service center
into a 238,000-square-foot new facility at TRISTAR Business Communities’
Riverport Commons development in Maryland Heights. The company also
plans to open a 24,000-square-foot technical data center for national
and local claims operations at Riverport, representing an additional
$47 million in new physical investment in the metro area.
The aggregate economic impact of this 1,900-job national service
center will be over $190 million per year to the bi-state region,
according to an economic impact analysis by RCGA Chief Economist
Bryan Bezold.
The RCGA, the State, St. Louis County and Maryland Heights had worked
on the Magellan project for more than a year. Thursday’s announcement
that St. Louis won out over Maryland and Utah in landing the Magellan
National Service Center is another vivid example of the value of
our region working together on a united basis in economic development.
Like the 5,000-job announcement by CitiMortgage earlier in January,
the St. Louis region once again retained a solid existing business
partner and is helping that company grow here.
