Nearing Completion of Fast-Track Expansion of Post-Dispatch Printing
Facility
Above:
The fast-track expansion of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch printing
facility in Maryland Heights requires R.G. Brinkmann Construction
Co. to complete the $17 million project without disrupting newspaper
production.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch will consolidate printing operations
this summer with the completion of an expansion of its facility
in Maryland Heights. R.G. Brinkmann Construction Co. is adding 110,000
square feet to the newspaper’s main printing facility at 1170 Dunlap
Industrial Drive at a cost of $17 million, including the equipment.
Currently, the Post-Dispatch leases a separate building where
packaging machinery inserts advertising into the newspaper. Those
operations will move into the expanded facility, which will be able
to print, insert and assemble, stack and bundle the newspaper on
pallets for delivery to regional depots for distribution.
TRi,Architekts designed additional space to the printing operations,
as well as renovations. The project includes a new entrance from
Fairgrove Industrial Blvd., expanded newsprint storage, addition
of the newspaper packaging center, new employee areas, improved
traffic flow, and specialized climate control.
The fast track, eight-month project has required construction to
proceed without disrupting newspaper production. The Post-Dispatch
currently prints 320,000 daily and 520,000 Sunday newspapers. The
printing and packaging operations run 20 hours per day, seven days
a week.
“Putting our entire production operation under one roof will greatly
improve the efficiency of printing and packaging the newspaper for
delivery to our readers,” says John Dennan, vice president of production
for the Post-Dispatch. “It’s a most challenging project that we
originally thought would take a year-and-a-half to complete.”
Joining Brinkmann and TRi,Architekts on the project are Ibrahim
Engineering Corp., structural engineer; J.R. Grimes Consulting Engineering
Inc., civil engineer; Tennill & Associates Inc., consulting engineer;
and Wiegmann & Associates Inc., mechanical engineer.

Designed by
Phillips Swager Associates of Peoria, Ill., St. Charles Criminal
Justice Center will replace an existing police and municipal court
center that has served the city since 1979. That building was intended
to handle 70 police officers and 15 other city employees. According
to St. Charles Police Chief Paul Corbin, the city’s police department
has more than doubled since that time and the new facility should
handle St. Charles’ future needs up to 148 people, including 107
police officers.
Joining Paric and Swager on the project is Kuhlman Design Group
as civil, mechanical and electrical engineer.

Heart and Ambulatory Services Center, which will include outpatient
cardiac cath labs and private physicians’ suites, connected to the
hospital and a new parking garage.
