Airlines CEO Don Carty Brings Message to St. Louis
Some 600 St. Louis regional business, civic and elected leaders
gathered at the Regal Riverfront Hotel in February for an RCGA Town
Hall Forum luncheon to hear American Airlines Chairman, President
and CEO Don Carty share his vision for the future as the
airline prepares to add Lambert–St. Louis International Airport
and TWA to its growing network. “The St. Louis hub gives us a third
powerful connecting hub—along with DFW and Chicago—in the middle
of the country, thereby strengthening our position as a leading
east-west carrier, and giving customers flying from one side of
the country to the other a new travel option within the American
system,” he noted during his address.
“We think the bringing together of American and TWA will mean great
things for us, for the headquarter companies based here, and for
the local and regional communities at large, who have always been
so supportive of commercial aviation,” he added. Carty said he’s
hopeful the bankruptcy court could, under optimum circumstances,
approve American Airlines’ purchase of TWA’s assets by mid-March.
He also praised the leadership of TWA President and CEO and RCGA
Board member Bill Compton, noting that he and his team have
done an extraordinary job of running TWA under enormously difficult
circumstances.
In introducing Carty to the Town Hall Forum, RCGA Chairman John
Bachmann noted “the sadness over the pending end of the TWA
brand is “overwhelmed” by the way circumstances have sorted themselves
out. Both TWA’s financial troubles and improvements made at the
nation’s eighth-largest carrier during Bill Compton’s tenure were
well-publicized. Everyone (other bidders) had a chance to step in
and do something about this. No one else did.” He said American
stepped forward because it saw the opportunity to expand its network.
Carty stated that American enthusiastically supports the Lambert
Airport expansion plan, which he called very important to American
Airlines’ future growth opportunities. |
